Project Title
Facilities Drawings Verification, Layering Simplification & PLM Integration
Project Overview
This 12-month internship offers an exciting hands-on opportunity for a motivated Industrial or Mechanical Engineering student to lead a project that enhances the accuracy and usability of facilities engineering drawings within a world-class aerospace manufacturing facility. The intern will be responsible for verifying, correcting, updating, and simplifying the company's suite of facilities engineering drawings. This project includes close collaboration with stakeholders across departments to ensure drawing layers meet operational needs and integration of the final drawings into the company's Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system under version control.
Benefits of the Internship
- Ownership of a technical documentation project with lasting business value.
- Mentorship from experienced engineers, configuration specialists, and facilities managers.
- Insight into aerospace facility operations and systems integration.
- Possibility of full-time employment or future placement based on performance and business needs.
Main Project Deliverables
1. Baseline Drawing Verification:
- Audit existing facility drawings to verify critical dimensions including wall placement, door locations, window positions, and structural elements.
- Conduct site walkthroughs and field measurements where discrepancies are identified.
- Ensure all verified baseline drawings are updated with accurate as built dimensions and annotations.
2. Layering Structure Simplification:
- Analyze existing drawing files to simplify and standardize the CAD layering structure.
- Work with Facilities and functional teams to develop layer naming conventions for consistency across drawings.
- Ensure a one-layer-per-feature approach (e.g., a single layer for major electrical breakers, one for compressed air lines etc).
- Remove legacy, redundant, or unused layers to improve file usability and system performance
3. Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Engage with cross-functional stakeholders including EH&S, Maintenance, Facilities, and Operations, to understand their drawing-related needs.
- Ensure dedicated, accurate layers are created or updated for each functional group (e.g. for EH&S: fire extinguisher locations, PPE zones, evacuation routes, etc).
- Document and communicate layer usage standards to internal users.
4. Version Control & PLM Integration:
- Establish a baseline set of version-controlled drawings.
- Work in collaboration with the Configuration Management team to integrate finalized drawings into the PLM system (Teamcenter).
- Ensure all files meet company versioning, metadata, and access protocols.
Learning Outcomes
- Real-world experience auditing and updating critical facilities infrastructure documentation.
- Practical exposure to CAD standards, version control systems, and PLM tools.
- Cross-functional collaboration and communication with engineering, safety, and operations stakeholders.
- Foundational understanding of configuration control and drawing lifecycle management.
Job Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a degree in Industrial, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering (or similar).
- Currently holds3.0 GPA or hire.
- Available to work 30+ hours per week.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar drawing tools.
- Excellent attention to detail and spatial reasoning.
- Ability to work independently and conduct on-site verifications in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and capable of handling large datasets.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage cross-functional teams.
- US Person per ITAR regulations and able to comply with export compliance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with asset management systems or maintenance planning.
- Understanding of health & safety standards (e.g. LOTO procedures, risk assessments).
- Interest or coursework in reliability engineering, digital transformation, or industrial safety.
- Basic experience with QR code platforms or mobile-linked documentation tools.
