DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies serves as a catalyst for positive change by advancing global access, equity, and social and economic mobility through educational enrichment across the lifespan.

As a fully self-supporting division under UC San Diego Academic Affairs, Extended Studies operates year-round (12 months of active instruction) with a budget of $50 million annually. A team of 260 academic and staff employees and more than 1,200 instructors fulfill the mission of delivering exceptional educational experiences and services that reflect our standing as part of a top-tier globally renowned public research University.

Extended Studies operates in 200,000 square feet of managed space, including a headquarters building with classrooms, training spaces and key administrative offices adjacent to the UC San Diego campus, as well as off-campus classroom facilities in nearby University City. The division maintains a robust online learning platform, operating 24/7 with webcasting and video-conferencing capabilities, while also maintaining a strong web presence with e-commerce operating 24/7. There are over 90,000 enrollment transactions annually, supported by a robust network of representatives, agents, and students. Focused on community engagement and enrichment, the division operates two television stations, UCTV and UCSD-TV, and a variety of public lecture programs, while staying active in federal, state, local, and private research and technical assistance programs and activities.

Extended Studies is also responsible for the management and financial, operational, and programming oversight of UC San Diego Park & Market, a 66,000-square-foot, four-story, multi-purpose office building located in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego. Park & Market supports and hosts a wide variety of civic, community, corporate, and campus events, meetings, conferences, and programs.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Program Manager for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies plays a key role in supporting the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of non-credit educational programs designed for adults aged 50 and over. In collaboration with the Osher Advisory Council, membership, instructors, and department leadership, the Program Manager ensures the delivery of high-quality, engaging, and intellectually enriching programming that reflects the mission of lifelong learning.

Using advanced knowledge and experience in public educational programming, the Program Manager addresses diverse academic needs and operational challenges. This role contributes to the creation of new courses and special programs, events and manages a complex portfolio of activities with a focus on quality, consistency, and innovation. The incumbent demonstrates sound judgment in selecting instructional methods, designing course content, and guiding program development to meet the evolving interests of the Osher community.

The Program Manager also serves as a liaison between the Osher program and campus partners, working collaboratively with other UC San Diego divisions, colleges, and departments, as well as institutions across the UC system, California State University, and California Community Colleges.

This role is based at 8980 Villa La Jolla Drive, the primary location for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. It requires a blend of programmatic insight, relationship-building skills, and operational excellence to serve the unique needs of the Osher community.

  • Incumbent must be available for occasional evenings / weekends and may be required to attend conferences / programs both locally and out-of-town, as requested.

  • This position is fully onsite.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated experience providing academic advising and customer service to students and experience serving a diverse group of customers.

  • Thorough knowledge of marketing concepts including participating in developing marketing plans, targeting audiences, and coordinating marketing events.

  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills. Excellent organization abilities and project management skills to independently manage complex tasks, with competing demands for time and resources. Ability to prioritize and schedule work effectively within set guidelines to meet established deadlines.

  • Experience working within a team framework. Experience participating and presenting in group discussions/meetings regarding systems, procedures, policies and goals of the department. Strong demonstrated experience presenting program information to individuals and groups of collaborators and partners.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience working in continuing education and educational programs for adults age 50+.

  • Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing /editing skills for memos, routine correspondence, and business agreements. Excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.

  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in delivering programs.

  • Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures.

  • Thorough knowledge of functional area and understanding of how work may impact other areas.

  • Thorough knowledge of current public educational programs and trends.

  • Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new presentations / courses to meet organizational needs.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and overseeing budgets.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training and form will be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
