Essential Job Duties
Are you passionate about sustainable landscapes, biodiversity, and long-term stewardship of natural resources? NC State University is seeking an Urban Forester to lead the development and management of our growing and diverse campus tree canopy.
As part of Campus Planning and Strategic Investment unit, you'll play a vital role in optimizing the design and use of campus land while balancing environmental, social, and economic priorities. You'll also have the exciting opportunity to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and the wider community-and even teach as a lecturer in the College of Natural Resources.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Develop and implement a sustainable urban forestry management plan that aligns with the university's Physical Master Plan, sustainability goals, and other planning and operational objectives
  • Acts as the lead point of contact to manage Lake Raleigh Woods, a 96-acre preserve for teaching, research, and recreation
  • Coordinates and collaborates with faculty and staff from other units regarding teaching, research, and recreational aspects of Lake Raleigh Woods

  • Develop and maintain NC State Design and Construction Guidelines related to tree planting and construction near treesand contribute to the development and maintenance of NC State's tree inventory, and identify procedures for keeping data current and valid
  • Utilize data to determine trends and make recommendations regarding the management of the urban forest
  • Guide university officials in the long-term development and maintenance of natural systems on campus
  • Coordinate with government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure campus forestry projects contribute to the health of the regional tree canopy and collaborate with staff in Landscape Maintenance and Operations regarding the maintenance and care of trees on campus
  • Proactively seeks funding opportunities through grants or other available resources to support the implementation of the urban forestry plan

  • Oversee the development of outreach initiatives to raise awareness about the campus urban forest and sustainable land management
  • Serve as a standing member of the Urban Forest Committee and as NC State's representative for urban forestry with outside agencies
  • Work with faculty and students on special projects related to the urban forest and tree inventory

  • Lead campus-wide reforestation projects that foster resilience, increase biodiversity, mitigate urban heat island effects, and provide other environmental benefits
  • Collaborate with Landscape Maintenance and Operations staff on an annual budget in support of tree health management, pruning and removals, replacements, and urban forest education and outreach
  • Perform plan reviews for projects to ensure tree protection and new tree placement are considered and evaluate proposed tree removals for possible alternative solutions
  • Guide Project Managers (PMs) and stakeholders to address and support urban forestry objectives and provide technical assistance to maintain and enhance development projects as they pertain to tree canopy, plantings, and green infrastructure
  • Makes recommendations for tree placement and species selection based on professional knowledge, data, and trends

Other Responsibilities

  • Provide support and mentorship for research projects, student internships, and academic coursework related to urban forestry, and foster community education and outreach efforts related to urban forestry and related topics
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of urban forestry, arboricultural practices, materials, and equipment related to tree care and maintenance
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of landscape architecture, civil engineering, design, and construction
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data and present summaries and recommendations to support program goals
  • Public engagement and outreach skills
  • Project management skills, including team facilitation
  • Ability to forecast probable program changes and adjust the program in response
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with campus and local community
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing arboriculture or forestry in university or street tree programs
  • Experience with maintaining a tree or forest asset inventory
  • Ability to build and cultivate strong collaborative relationships with internal and external partners

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid driver's license required
  • North Carolina driver's license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
  • Certification as a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture, Tree Risk Assessment Arborist, or Board-Certified Master Arborist certification is required or the ability to obtain within one year
