Primary Purpose of Organization Unit
The primary purpose of the William C. Friday Laboratory in the UNCP Biotech Center is for the advancement of biomedical studies to benefit people with brain disorders and other degenerative diseases.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Research Specialist will conduct research and assist student projects that are to understand key events related to brain vulnerability, dementia risk factors, as well as potential compensatory responses involved that may provide treatment avenues.
Job Description
The Research Specialist will conduct research to understand key events related to blast-induced and excitotoxic alterations in the brain, as well as the compensatory responses activated that may offset the associated dementia risk. The work will involve being responsible for brain slice cultures, animal insult procedures, data summaries, compound categorizing, and routine brain sample testing. The work will contribute to multidisciplinary projects focusing on neurodegenerative disorders as well as neuroprotective signaling and related pharmacological avenues. The tests will include hippocampal slice cultures to measure therapeutic targets and to develop new-generation agents for the treatment of dementia, excitotoxic damage, and traumatic brain injury.

The Research Specialist will conduct broad data analyses (e.g. enzyme assays, proteomics data mining, microscopy/image analyses), proteomic pathway testing, and maintain a lab notebook and data records. The vital research will provide the foundation necessary to secure future funding and to find compounds with improve membrane permeability and activity in the brain.

The component of the Lab Manager duties include laboratory maintenance to support research and training activity conducted specifically in the W. C. Friday Laboratory. Duties will be conducted at the Biotech Research and Training Center and include, but not limited to, the set-up of scientific equipment for projects, maintaining lab supplies and disposables, equipment repair and regular maintenance, provide oversight and notebook advice to student researchers, apply scientific knowledge to plan lab operations, prepare solutions and other materials needed for projects, assure good research practice for instrument calibrations and notebook organization, and teach accurate graph production from data generated by student projects.
Management Preference
prior laboratory experience, experience mentoring students, and is familiar with microscopes.
