Position Summary:

The Children's Aid Society After School in Action Program at SU Campus, funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) is an after-school and holiday enrichment program operating Monday through Friday, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm. The program offers tutorial help for students with their homework, additional educational instruction, social emotional learning, and the opportunity to engage in an array of enriching sports and art based activities.

A Dance Specialist is responsible for the supervision and care of (up to) 20 children, which comprise a group or club. A Dance Specialist is a leader, who commits to teach by modeling and demonstrates characteristics that participants can learn from. It is essential that candidates applying for this position enjoy being around middle school age children, respects them as people, and seeks to include them in fun learning activities.

Essential Duties:



  • Lead dance classes for individual or groups of participants.
  • Teach various dancing techniques.
  • Work with the Program Director to help produce three shows within the academic year.
  • Monitor student performances and plan all dance activities with literacy and math infusion.
  • Instruct all participants and suggest improvements to the Program Director and students.
  • Adapt teaching methods to meet participants' needs.
  • Provide individual and group tutoring in reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills.
  • Develop classroom and behavioral management skills.
  • Implement professionally developed literacy-based curriculum.
  • Build relationships with children and their families.
  • Be punctual, responsible, and have a positive attitude.
  • Provide encouragement to children.
  • Plan, teach, supervise, and organize games.
  • Assist in activities or tasks necessary for the orderly operation of the program.
  • Supervise children during supper.
  • Ensure equipment is properly signed out, cleaned, and returned.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and trainings.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff members in the program and schools.


Minimum Qualifications:

* Pursing a Bachelors or Associates Degree

* Field of study in Education, Social Work or Performing Arts

* At least one year experience working with children, tutoring, or teaching is highly preferred.

* Available from September through June.
