The expected hiring range for this position is:

$25.17-$32.54.

About the Role:

Fermilab's ESH Radiation Physics Engineering group is seeking an Electronics Technician II. Under general supervision, the ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of electronic circuits, hands-on experience with diagnostic tools and instrumentation, and the ability to interpret schematics and technical documentation. Depending on the assignment, duties will include calibrating, repairing, and modifying radiation monitoring equipment, with a focus on accuracy and compliance with regulatory deadlines.

What your day-to-day as an Electronics Technician at Fermilab will look like:

  • Following established calibration procedures to ensure measurement accuracy and traceability.
  • Testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and modifying instrumentation systems, including DC high voltage, high impedance, digital signal, digital logic, and analog circuitry at the component level.
  • Supporting the planning, design, prototyping, testing, and implementation of new instrumentation.
  • Assisting in the construction, assembly, and testing of experimental and support equipment.
  • Accurately documenting work activities and results.
  • Managing small inventories of parts, supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations, as well as Laboratory policies and procedures.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in electronics preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in electronics or a closely related field.
  • Strong aptitude for electromechanical systems and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in analog and digital electronics, including component level diagnostics.
  • Ability to read and interpret circuit schematics and PCB assembly drawings.
  • Skilled in soldering and desoldering both through hole and surface mount components.
  • Competence in assembling circuits based on schematics, layouts, or written instructions.
  • Ability to follow detailed wiring diagrams and mechanical assembly guides.
  • Experience operating standard electronic test instruments such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and pulse generators.
  • Familiarity with the safe handling and use of common hand tools and power tools.
  • Working knowledge of the Windows PC environment and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to follow both written procedures and verbal instructions accurately and consistently.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with emphasis on documenting repairs and modifications clearly and effectively.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a technical team.
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to operate cars and light trucks.

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of electronics and mechanical technology concepts from extensive experience or academic study that is relevant to assigned area.
  • May be required to legally operate a government vehicle.

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
