Duties and Responsibilities |
The
DFPA is comprised of the disciplines of Dance, Fine Arts, Music and Theatre; The Sound, Lighting and Video Supervisor (
SLVS), reports to the Managing Director and the Chairperson of the Department and is in close collaboration and partnership with the resident faculty lighting designer. The
SLVS is responsible for organizing and overseeing the safe and efficient implementation of all performance lighting, electrical effects, sound equipment, and projections for the department's ambitious annual public programming in addition to maintain the inventories and equipment related to sound, lighting and projections. This includes serving as Head Electrician on all theatre and dance productions; and overseeing the implementation of sound, lighting and recording needs of music concerts and events. Annually the
DFPA produces four large mainstage productions (including one dance concert); 3-4 productions in our studio space, and 4-6 smaller theatre and dance projects with limited technical requirements. The
LSS is the resident expert on audio and lighting controls, recording equipment and communication systems (clear-com, intercom) and provides training and operational support for activities that require those systems to members of the department and the university. In collaboration with theatre faculty, the
SLVS teaches 1-2 sections of Theatre Practicum: Electrics per semester, the introductory electrics stagecraft course to all theatre and dance majors. This is a practical course that teaches both basics in theatrical lighting but also leads the students in the course to provide the labor support to hang and focus the semester's productions. The
SLVS will partner with design faculty to provide mentorship for electricians, sound, lighting and projections designers. Additionally, the
SLVS assists the faculty in courses and academic activities that result in the use of the sound, lighting and projections systems. This may include courses in lighting design or stage management or music technology.
Primary Responsibilities
Manage operations of Electrics Shop, theatrical sound, lighting and video systems and storage (20%)
Oversee the daily operations of the electrics department. Has expertise in audio mixing consoles, computer control systems, equalizers, compressors, gates, digital processors, frequency dividers, audio processors,
LED lighting units, moving lights, special effects gear, atmospherics, assisted listening devices and other production electronics, audio, lighting and video systems.
- Maintains a safe work environment for those working in and using theatre and electrical support spaces.
- Oversees students that support audio, video and lighting systems. (Including both student workers and students participating in experiences for academic credit.)
- Hires, schedules, trains, supervises and maintains the quality of student workers supporting the electrics department
- Participate in the recruitment and hiring of electrics personnel
- Cultivates a culture of students interested and proficient in technical theatre
- Organizes weekly work schedules, and schedules appropriate technical support for events and directs student labor accordingly.
- Generates, maintains, and distributes technical specifications, drawings, and equipment inventories of DFPA spaces (as they relate to the electrics department) to designers and stakeholders as needed.
- Maintains inventory, drawings and paperwork on theatres and equipment.
- Maintains organized and functional inventory of stage lighting fixtures, accessories, cables and color filters, gobos, tapes and other stock materials and supplies.
- Maintains all paperwork related to lighting and maintains / updates the Lighting operating manuals.
- Maintains inventory and electrics equipment in the technical gallery and in the theatres.
- Maintain all communication equipment (clear-com headsets, two-way radios)
- Ensures electrics equipment is in good repair / organizes maintenance
- Manages the sound and lighting equipment storages to ensure they are organized and orderly and well maintained and labeled.
- Conducts regular maintenance, repair and adjustment to stage lighting and sound equipment in accordance with existing safety regulations.
- Oversees management of electronic inventories, tracking needs, and logging significant repairs/outstanding issues
- Arranges for regular repair and cleaning of theatrical lighting and sound systems (including front of house lighting, assisted listening devices and recording equipment).
- Maintain warranties on major tools and equipment in electrics
- Schedules and coordinates work with external vendors and outside technicians
- In conjunction with the design and management faculty and the technical and managing directors create effective policies as it relates to the operation and organization of electrics equipment and spaces.
- Prepares and maintains the Newhart Family Theatre and Underground Theatre house plots, recommend changes when necessary and leads all restoring of the house plot after productions and events.
- Maintains the department's library of audio files and sound effects.
Supervises and facilitates the implementation of all audio, lighting, and projection needs of theatre, music and dance productions in order to materialize the artistic vision of designers and directors within financial and scheduling constraints and available resources. (20%)
In conjunction with the Managing Director and resident faculty Lighting Designer, based on production schedule, prepare a list of deadlines and work schedules for sound and lighting needs and communicate to stake holders. (schedule of work and deadlines; commitments include practice rehearsals, special recording sessions, crew instruction sessions, level setting sessions, technical rehearsals and performances)
- Serve as Liaison with Lighting Designers, Sound Designers and Projections Designers for light plot and specifications, providing necessary information (ground plans, inventory lists, preliminary schedules, etc.)
- Provide Production Manager and Lighting/Sound/Projection Designers with estimates of labor and materials required to produce lighting effects based on design information provided by lighting designer (or another designer).
- Advise on feasibility of design, in consultation with Technical Director, with respect to venue limitations, inventory, budget, schedule, and other special concern.
- Plan lighting, sound, and projections hang, focus, and cueing in consultation with Technical Director and Production Management.
- Plan the construction and/or location of equipment, in consultation with Tech Director Lighting Designer, and Stage Manager.
Coordinate in consultation with Sound Designer/Director the location and (possible) recording of musicians, if live music is to be used.
- Interpret designers' plot, lead crew hanging, circuiting and focusing of stage lighting equipment.
- Place orders for lighting, sound, and projections equipment (rental gear, expendables, special equipment, etc.) and arrange for transportation to appropriate venue
- Supervise hanging of all lights and lighting equipment
- Supervise focus
- Collaborate with Sound Designer and assist in setting up monitors, equipment and communication systems during LOAD IN.
- Schedule time in space for designers to program or set audio levels
- Attend all services with Lighting Designer and Sound Designer
- Call follow spot cues as necessary and provide training to operators
- Maintains effective communication with designer, stage manager, and department heads to ensure smooth installation and operation of electrics department needs on a production.
- Attends first technical rehearsal (typically a Thursday evening) and notes during tech week as needed.
- Works with stage management and technical director for placement of all cues, work, and running lights backstage for each production. Assists with the installation of communication systems.
- Attend departmental meetings, production meetings, additional technical rehearsals, and preview performances as determined necessary.
- Construction of special effects as necessary.
- Provides training for board operators, crew at Crew Training night, and stage management.
- Preparation and updating all required paperwork to track lighting and sound designs.
- Execute work notes and focus notes during the tech week, typically weekend mornings.
- Establish and maintain accurate archival records of all shows.
- In conjunction with the Technical Director preside over and facilitate the strike of all electrical equipment in a timely manner.
Support the Sound and Lighting needs for Music Concerts and Recitals (20%)
In conjunction with the Managing Director and Operations and Concert Manager, develop the official schedule of concerts, production and coordinating meetings, technical rehearsals and load in schedule.
- Attends music concert coordinating meetings and Ensemble meetings
- Works with music faculty to identify the sound and lighting needs of a concert or recital and support them appropriately
Collaborates with Operations Manager and Music faculty provide anticipated support including sound balancing, amps, mic needs and placement. As well as supporting load in and set up and acts as lead on strike of each event.
- Ensure students are trained in proper equipment set-up and operation for rehearsals and performances.
- Assists in the determination of placement of audio, lighting and video equipment for all music concerts and recitals.
- Train crew/students on appropriate booth, head-set and backstage etiquette.
- Presides over technical rehearsals
- Supervises the removal of all sound, music and communications equipment during the strike of concert and arranges for the return of gear to assigned storage locations.
- Arranges for the recording of concerts and in conjunction with music faculty oversees the audio recording library.
Ensure recordings are catalogued and distributed appropriately.
Provide Electrics Training and Instruction to students, faculty and staff (20%)
- Collaborates with design faculty and management faculty on implementing technical theatre curriculum. Basic learning outcomes, lesson plans, teaching materials, tests will be provided by faculty lighting designer. Coordinate with faculty lighting designer changes, additions and subtractions to curriculum.
- Teach sections of Electrics -Theatre Practicum (THTR 321E) each semester; provide basic training in electrics and lighting stage craft.
- Develop syllabus based on production schedule
- Support the needs of sound and lighting for theatre, music and dance performances
- Assign grades accordingly
- In collaboration with resident Lighting Design faculty, serve as a resource and mentor to all sound design and lighting design students. On student designed mainstage productions mentorship will involve alternating nights during tech with the faculty lighting design mentor.
- Provides training and mentorship on the technical systems in the theatre to student crews and workers, provides basic training in a working knowledge/understanding of the principals of lighting, lighting technology, electricity, design, in addition to other aspects as they relate to the overall theatre production process.
- Provide training for sound and lighting and projections operators (THTR 321R), primarily on Tuesday evening of tech week.
- Provide training and advising stage management students in assembling communication channels and tech tables. (THTR 324)
- Provides instruction in the appropriate use of tools, safety, and essential technical theatre learning outcomes.
- In conjunction with design faculty, serves as mentor to design and technical theatre students, (including students that may be interested in Sound and Lighting Design, Stage Management, Audio Engineering and Electrics) covering topics such as recording, audio engineering, CAD, rigging, and special effects.
- Provides technical assistance for courses that require the use of sound and lighting equipment (i.e.. Theatre Workshop, Lighting Design, Music Technology)
- Orders necessary supplies and materials required for courses (i.e. wrenches, safety kits, gel, etc.)
Organize and supervise the work of students assigned to sound crew. This could include running crew members and sound board operators. This crew is responsible for all sound, music and communications, intercom and cue light systems used in the theatre/auditorium, lobby and support spaces.
Provides training for faculty, staff and students on audio, video, lighting and communication systems as needed.
Serve as Resident Expert in Sound and Lighting Equipment and Systems (10%)
- Provides expertise in the areas of sound and lighting Includes purchasing and renting necessary equipment.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in the setup, programming and operation of all audio, video and lighting systems. Includes conventional stage lighting and controllers, analog and digital audio systems, and video systems.
- Participates in weekly production staff coordinating meetings, select theatre and music faculty meetings and technical rehearsals on behalf of the needs of sound, lighting and projections.
- In coordination with production management, facilitate the implementation of all lighting, sound and projection needs for various groups that rent or use theatre spaces.
- Provides classroom support to DFPA spaces with sound and lighting elements (409, Annex dance studio, Music Hall, Ralph Arnold Gallery, Digital Piano lab)
- Coordinates support, maintenance and development with ITS in classrooms
- Coordinates support of Mundelein Auditorium with facilities, ITS and various stakeholders
- Serve as ambassador of DFPA in matters that relate to theatre facilities, sound and lighting equipment, Advise/provide technical support as needed with respect to lighting at special events or functions to members inside the DFPA and with other areas of the university. (Special Events, Student Complex, Conference Services, etc.) Advise on capital purchases in other areas of the university in the areas of sound and lighting.
- Oversee the use of the Mundelein Auditorium and Palm Court Sound and Lighting systems
- Collaborate with Campus Reservations and the Operations Manager to provide audio and lighting support for events hosted in the Palm Court and Mundelein Auditorium during the academic year.
- Assists with maintenance of sound and lighting equipment, filing necessary work orders, etc.
Budget and Resource Management (5%)
Prepares and reconciles seasonal and production specific budgets for electrics.
- Monitors work-study, production and shop spending each fiscal year
- Prepares capital and small equipment budget reports and spending projections
- Submits Procard receipts and reconcile purchases in a timely manner and in accordance with university policies.
- Manage and track sound and lighting budgets, control costs and ensuring efficient use of resources within agreed budgets.
- Provide input on the creation of technical budgets, including but not limited to crew and staffing requirements and material and equipment needs.
- Participates in strategic planning related to capital lighting, sound and projection advancements
- Communicate with key stakeholders in music, dance, theatre and fine arts about audio, lighting and projection needs.
- Prepare appropriate Capital Budget requests collaboration with faculty and Managing Director
Secondary Responsibilities (5%)
- In collaboration with the Managing Director and Technical Director, assist with the execution of technical elements for external events held in the theatre.
- Potential to collaborate on Gallery Exhibitions, Partnerships with other departments where a sound, lighting or projection element is involved.
- Coordination with campus agents in Housekeeping, Facilities and campus safety as it relates to the management of light shops, theatres and other performance venues.
- Other duties that may be required by the Managing Director of Chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts

- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in technical theatre or related discipline
- 2-3 years of experience in a similar position.
- Thorough knowledge and experience with lighting and sound software (Lightwright, Vectorworks, Qlab) and lighting consoles, theatrical electrics, current lighting technology and basic wiring.
- Moderate knowledge of projections equipment required.
- Thorough working knowledge and experience with audio reinforcement for live music performances and live mixing.
- Previous teaching experience or intern/apprentice training preferred.
- Possess a valid Illinois Driver's license and have access to a vehicle for transportation.
- Ability to supervise staff required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
- Good leadership and people management skills; good organizational and time management skills
