This position will be a part of the UAW union moving forward.

DESCRIPTION

Named for environmentalist, nature writer and Sierra Club founder, John Muir, and inspired by his remarkable life, John Muir College of UC San Diego stresses the spirit of individual choice and responsibility within the framework of a welcoming and supportive community. Muir was the second college to be founded at UC San Diego and admitted its first students in 1967. Muir is a special place where generations of students have felt recognized and valued as individuals and experienced a strong sense of belonging within this large research university. The College's motto, "Celebrating the Independent Spirit," recognizes both our namesake John Muir and the achievements of our talented and enterprising students and alumni.

Provide academic advising to students on the College's general-education requirements, UCSD policies and procedures, progress towards graduation, and overall decision-making on academic and career issues. Primary responsibility includes providing in-person/walk-in advising as well as online advising via the Virtual Advising Center. Perform quarterly reviews of academic records to ensure compliance with academic regulations and policies and communicate with students accordingly. Support the degree audit process for graduation. Conduct presentations at new student orientation and other outreach events. Provide virtual enrollment advising to a caseload of new freshman and transfer students. Assist with developing and implementing programs and workshops, as needed. Serve on College and campus-wide committees.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of educational theory and principles, and experience in practical application of counseling techniques in a college advising environment.

  • Knowledge of departmental / school / college courses and majors.

  • Knowledge of department / school / college policies, procedures, and requirements. Ability to analyze, interpret, apply and explain a variety of college, departmental and campus academic policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated referral and liaison skills and recognition and maintenance of confidentiality. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving. Skill in helping students with decision making.

  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original idea to solve problems. Demonstrated skills and abilities in problem solving and conflict resolution with the ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, cultural sensitivity, and diplomacy.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening. Demonstrated tact and diplomacy in working with diverse population, including parents, students, faculty, campus administrators, and the public.

  • Ability to multi-task. Demonstrated skill in organizing work and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines. Ability to manage heavy workload and handle multiple tasks with potentially competing deadlines while maintaining accuracy. Demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative, work independently, and exercise professional judgment.

  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating and evaluating academic records.

  • Expertise in functioning as a group leader and facilitating group interactions.

  • Ability to identify and develop appropriate strategies in relation to specific populations and meet the needs of various groups and individuals.

  • Demonstrated skill in using standard office computer technology (including internet technology and web based systems) and campus administrative computing systems, and the willingness and ability to update and maintain those skills as required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,800 - $91,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.77 - $43.58

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
