Located on the scenic San Diego Bay, the Nimitz Marine Facility (MarFac) is a unique and exciting place to work. As a Security Guard on our team, you'll play a critical role in protecting our people, facilities, and research, and helping us advance our mission to understand and protect the ocean.

Job Summary:

The MarFac Security Guard will provide continuous foot patrol of the Nimitz Marine Facility, Marine Physical Laboratory, and research vessels, including ship's compartments, buildings, grounds, stairwells, walkways, quays, public, and staff areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and submitting detailed written daily activity logs and incident reports, checking doors and securing all zones at closing, and handling emergency situations and building evacuations.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide continuous foot patrol of MarFac facilities and research vessels

  • Prepare and submit detailed written daily activity logs and incident reports

  • Check doors and secure all zones at closing

  • Handle emergency situations and building evacuations

  • Provide a high degree of public contact and community service, including public information, giving directions and assistance, and providing escorts

  • Work closely with campus, military, and harbor police in handling security incidents and incident follow-up tasks

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to handle a high degree of public contact responsibly and effectively.

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and operate portable telephones, radios, and other communication devices appropriately and professionally.

  • Ability to remain calm, take appropriate action, and maintain a professional and impartial stance in all safety, security, emergency, and/or disaster situations as encountered.

  • Demonstrated written reporting skills including the proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures; ability to learn understand and follow policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of security for the MarFac grounds and people in the buildings.

  • Ability to work well and cooperatively with faculty and staff, emergency personnel, students, and the public.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and independently organize available work time to meet assigned responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated communication skills for group activities including expressing ideas effectively, seeking and respecting the opinions of others, active listening, and willingness to share ideas; facilitation skills sufficient to participate in and lead discussions.

  • Ability to exercise proper discretion and confidentiality when dealing with law enforcement information, information about individuals, and other information obtained in the line of duty.

  • Demonstrated ability to use personal computers, printers, and wordprocessing and database software in a networked environment.

  • Ability to record in writing information obtained during interviews and investigations. Knowledge of correct techniques to screen calls, provide messages, and track responses, both verbal and written.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Must be willing and able to work 10:30PM-6:30AM as well as other shifts on an as-needed basis.

  • Must be able to adjust work schedule for extended hours, weekends, and holiday coverage

  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the TSA.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $44,099 - $58,151 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.12 - $27.85

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
