1st Class Carpenter
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1 st Class Carpenter to support day shift operations in our Shipyard in Norfolk, VA.
Job Description:


  • Construct, install and repair wooden structure and fixtures including scaffolding and cradles.
  • Replace and repair wood, sheet metal, and fiberglass associated material on vessels.
  • Read blueprints, lay out designs, and construct structures.
  • Receive work orders and prints or sketches for the job. Create sketches showing construction details for the job.
  • Estimate material requirements and tools or equipment needed to perform job.
  • Set up and operate wood working tools to cut, form and finish job.
  • Erect or dismantle structures, repairs or refinishes walls and structures.
  • Install wood or metal parts.
  • Install glass or replaces broken glass as required.
  • Prepare irregular scaffolding which may be required.
  • Lubricate and maintain carpenter shop equipment.
  • Crate machinery and other equipment for shipment
  • Complete finish work and all types of flooring as well as fiber glass tail shafts for vessels.
  • Construct, fit, repair and install structures, fixtures, flooring and cabinets in the boat per drawings, sketches and verbal instructions.
  • Build, layout and/or install stairs, partitions, framing using marine adhesives, biscuit joinery, nails, staples and screws.
  • Establish dimensional reference points on layout and hull to create templates.
  • Fit and install prefabricated items including window frames, door jambs, doors and other trim and hardware pieces.
  • Install insulation in ceilings, walls and other compartments.
  • Bulkhead and hull repair as needed.
  • Install fiberglass components in the boat.
  • Measure, cut, grind, fit, and install components per specifications.
  • Install windows and finish exterior hardware.
  • Apply basic math, reading and communication skills.
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.
  • Control cost in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Other duties may be assigned as workload dictates.


Qualifications:


  • Must have at least 7 years of carpentry experience.
  • Must have at least 10 years of experience with cabinets, and counter tops.
  • Must be able to read prints and lay outs.
  • Must be able to identify various types of wood.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.


Desired Qualifications:


  • Prefer the ability to obtain a DBIDS badge.
  • Prefer technical training.
  • Prefer at least 2 years of framing experience.
  • Prefer at least 2 years of renovation experience.
  • Possession of an OSHA 10-hour certification would be preferred.
  • Prefer at least 5 years of experience as a Finish Carpenter.


Travel Requirements:


  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
