Nature of Work: This is skilled work at the journey level installing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC systems and related electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment. Employees in this classification operate, adjust, and maintain boilers, air handlers, heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, refrigeration equipment, air compressors, and other auxiliary equipment in City-owned buildings. Work also includes major installation, repair, adjustment, calibration, and repair of telemetry systems, instrumentation, and related electronic equipment. An incumbent in this classification exercises independence in the performance of duties, receiving general guidance from a supervisor, and may be assigned as a lead worker on larger, more complex projects.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.

High school diploma or its equivalent
AND
1.Completion of vocational training program in HVAC maintenance repair AND one (1) year of HVAC maintenance experience.
OR
2.Three (3) years of HVAC maintenance experience
OR
3.Combination of education and experience.
Experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing high-pressure steam boilers, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment or in making repairs to plumbing and mechanical equipment is preferred.

Special Qualifications: Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of application. Must possess an EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling certification in air conditioning recovery and reclaiming at the time of application. Must possess and maintain a forklift operator's certificate by the end of the probationary period. Must possess a Third Grade Engineer's certificate issued by the City of Omaha within eighteen months after hire.

Pay Range: $28.55 with step increases to $39.55 Hourly

Who Can Apply: Applicants for a closed competitive posting are required to meet the following: Candidates must be a current or former City of Omaha employee in any of the following categories: Part-time, Seasonal, Classified, Unclassified, or Probationary, who has worked, at the time of application, at least 1,040 cumulative hours within the last 5 years and has been employed by the City at sometime within the last 18 months and who meets the qualifications as set forth in the posting.

Examination Information:

The multiple-choice/written examination will be on date to be determined later at the Omaha/Douglas Civic Center, 1819 Farnam Street. An invitation via email to the exam will be given to candidates once their application has been received, reviewed by a recruiter, and accepted to the test for the position. The test is designed to assess knowledge of the job, skills, and abilities of this position. The passing score on the examination is 50%. This will be weighted 100% in the final score.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Knowledge of, and ability to operate, computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.
* Knowledge of the materials, tools and equipment, theory, methods, and techniques used in the electrical and electronic trades.
* Knowledge of facility operations as they relate to HVAC systems.
* Knowledge of the principles governing the operation of high-pressure steam boilers, air conditioning equipment, steam generation, and steam heating systems.
* Knowledge of the standard tools and practices for repairing and maintaining heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and building equipment.
* Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in operating and repairing high-pressure boilers, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
* Skill in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical and electronic equipment.
* Skill in using and maintaining tools, equipment, and materials.
* Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronic device technology and software.
* Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints of electric and electronic designs.
* Ability to diagnose and repair malfunctions in high-pressure steam boilers, ventilation, air conditioning, and auxiliary equipment.
* Ability to prepare reports, complete work orders, and other forms, and maintain records.
* Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
* Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, site personnel, and members of the general public.

Detailed responsibilities:
* Inspects, maintains, repairs, and installs HVAC systems, including refrigeration equipment, air dryers, boilers, heat recovery devices, air compressors, water chemistry equipment, generators, wiring and conduit, and other electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment.
* Operates, adjusts, and maintains boilers, gas or oil-fired steam plants, air handlers, heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, air compressors, water chemistry equipment, generators, refrigeration equipment, and other auxiliary equipment.
* Performs water chemistry checks on boilers and cooling towers.
* Calibrates and maintains electronic monitoring and controlling devices, including telemetry equipment, flow meters, gauges, gas detectors, and time delay circuits.
* Reads and interprets wiring diagrams, blueprints, sketches, technical manuals, and specifications.
* Orders and procures repair and supply parts.
* Oversees the work activities of crew members on large projects, including equipment installations, provides technical direction and instructions, and assigns tasks.
* Prepares daily reports, completes work orders, and maintains preventive maintenance records.
* Determines installation, maintenance, or repair procedures and the equipment and materials needed to complete assigned projects.
* Assists with the development of work schedules and job priorities.
* Performs monthly elevator fire log testing.
* Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor.
* Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
