The Director of Internal Communications has responsibility for internal communications in support of Boston Medical Center's Health System's goals and priorities. In addition to developing, implementing and managing the internal communications program at BMC, the Director supports the creation of strategic internal communications activities that engage and unite BMC Health System employees, including strategic and tactical leadership of the internal communications program at BMCHP. The Director will surface issues and develop campaigns/plans that will drive BMCHS goals forward across internal channels and also partner with colleagues to support efforts externally as appropriate. Reporting to the Senior Director of Corporate Communications for BMCHS, the Director provides strategic internal communications support to internal stakeholders, editing and writing expertise, crisis management and after-hours emergency communications support for BMC/BMCHP as-needed. The Director will actively partner with colleagues across the Communications and marketing department to develop "internal" BMC stories to our external audiences via HealthCity and the social media program.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Manager supports strategic communications priorities in line with Boston Medical Center Health System's (BMCHS) goals and priorities with a focus on managing the internal communications program at our hospitals in the community. The position supports employee culture and engagement to ensure employees feel connected to the organization and to the broader health system. The Senior Manager will also be responsible for understanding the external environment/community and supporting external requests such as media requests. Reporting to the Senior Director, Internal Communications and Employee Engagement, the Senior Manager is an integral member of the Communications team and provides strategic communications support to internal stakeholders across BMCHS, editing and writing expertise, crisis management and after-hours emergency communications support for BMC in the community as-needed. The Senior Manager will play a critical role in supporting the smooth transition and integration of BMC in the community into BMCHS.

This is a hybrid role that works onsite at our hospitals in the community at least two days per week. The Senior Manager will also be required to attend meetings or work from 960 Mass. Ave, Boston approximately twice per month.

Location: This is a hybrid role that works onsite at our hospitals in the community at least two days per week, which includes our Boston Medical Center - Brighton and Boston Medical Center - Brockton locations.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:


  • Plays an active role in communications innovation and is a proactive contributor of new ideas and strategies for employee communication, engagement, and culture.
  • Develops and executes tailored internal communications campaigns for priority audiences.
  • Researches, writes, edits, and produces communications, including executive communications, internal newsletters, and other initiative-related content. Supports media requests and helps story mine within the organizations for an external audience.
  • Writes and shares stories and information from the hospitals that are of interest to the broader health system.
  • Collaborates with key clinical and administrative departments to develop communications programs to support BMCHS's quality and patient experience goals.
  • Oversees the hospitals' intranets, including updating content, content strategy, training, and ongoing updates to the site.
  • Works with departments and programs to optimize and update content across platforms, including internal channels.
  • Closely involved in the development of strategic internal communications strategies around high profile institution issues as well as crisis situations. Helps drive employee engagement and culture through events, initiatives, and content.
  • Amplifies key organizational messages to foster a sense of community related to culture, health equity, in partnership with key internal stakeholders such as HR.
  • Helps ensure compliance with style guides, brand standards, and other content guidance developed by Marketing and Communications.
  • Develops compelling ideas, approaches, and content for articles and other written materials that convey the key strengths, priorities, accomplishments, and positions to a wide range of audiences.
  • Provides written summaries of critical meetings and events and synthesizes content for maximum efficiency, readability, and relevance for hospital leadership and a variety of other audiences.
  • Supports content for Town Hall meetings, leadership meetings, and other employee forums.
  • Serves as a main point person for multiple internal constituents on internal communications strategy and tactics, providing valuable counsel and advice. Assists with organizing and executing special internal events such as service awards recognition.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a related field, and 8-10 years progressive experience in communications, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • Internal communications experience required.
  • Experience leading and managing complex projects, from creative development to completion, with a high-level of independence.
  • Experience and versatility in evaluating, deploying and managing digital communications strategies and technologies
  • Experience supporting change management efforts or working in an environment of change.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing communications strategies in large organizations.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (If none, please enter "N/A"):

  • Experience in health care preferred, ideally within the Greater Boston area.

  • Strategic communications planner and a significant hands-on contributor, with superior writing and communications skills.
  • Excellent writer and editor with keen attention to detail. Strong verbal communicator.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across various teams throughout a large, fast-paced and complex organizational environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues and information and present it in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Strong relationship-builder
  • Ability to create dynamic and engaging presentations using PowerPoint and other digital tools.
