Role Overview

A Radioscopy Technician in the DOE is a specialized professional who uses radioscopic (real-time X-ray imaging) equipment to inspect and evaluate materials, components, and assemblies-often in support of nuclear, energy, or national security projects. This work is crucial for quality assurance, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate Radioscopic Equipment: Set up, calibrate, and operate radioscopic/X-ray imaging devices to inspect welds, castings, and other critical components.
  • Interpret Images: Analyze radioscopic images to detect flaws such as cracks, voids, or inclusions in materials.
  • Documentation: Record inspection results, maintain detailed logs, and prepare technical reports for engineers and project managers.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all inspections comply with DOE regulations, safety standards, and project specifications.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and calibration of radioscopic equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow strict radiation safety protocols to protect self and others from exposure.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, project managers, and other technicians in multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications
  • Education: Required: High School Diploma/GED. Preferred: Associate's degree or technical certification in radiologic technology, nondestructive testing (NDT), or related field.
  • Certifications: ASNT (American Society for Nondestructive Testing) Level I or II in Radiographic Testing (RT) is often required; additional DOE-specific training may be necessary.
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience is preferred. Experience in a lab setting and instrumentation experience may be considered toward this requirement.
  • Skills: Attention to detail, technical proficiency with imaging equipment, strong analytical and communication skills.

Radioscopy Technicians help ensure the integrity and safety of materials and systems that are critical to national energy infrastructure and security. Their work helps prevent failures, accidents, and environmental hazards.
