POSITION SPECIFICS

The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking applications for the role of Genomics Core Facility Director. This is a non-tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Research Professor, Associate Research Professor, or Research Professor. The successful candidate will direct the Genomics Core Facility at University Park.

Responsibilities: Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Consult with facility customers about how to best utilize facility resources to answer their research questions. Provide advice on sample preparation and experimental design. Interact with the Bioinformatics Consulting Center staff on issues related to data analysis as needed.

  • Supervise a staff of five Core Research Technologists who work within the Genomics Core Facility supporting PSU faculty research. Record and report experimental results produced by the facility to customers in a clear and timely manner.

  • Manage both an operating budget and capital equipment budget to ensure the facility is providing needed services while maintaining a high cost recovery. Maintain approved use rates and liaise with external users in the creation of Academic Research Service Orders.

  • Remain up to date on advances in genomics through self-directed learning, consultation with faculty customers and vendors, involvement in professional societies, and attendance at regional and national conferences.

  • Provide leadership regarding acquisition of new technologies and adoption of new applications. Devise, modify or optimize protocols to meet customer research requirements.

  • Contribute to scientific papers originating from customer research. Contribute to research grants, center grants and instrumentation grants in conjunction with faculty customers.

  • Educate students through one-on-one consultation, facility tours, seminars, workshops, journal clubs, ad-hoc lectures, or participation in formal course offerings.

  • Participate in university service through participation in committee work. Take part in professional society service.

  • Promote the Genomics Core Facility by actively maintaining the facility web page, regularly sponsoring events, providing facility tours, and attendance at conferences.

Education and Experience: The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in a life-sciences or genomics-related field with exceptional hands-on experience in all aspects of next-generation sequencing. Candidates must have demonstrated experience with DNA/RNA quality control, preparation of templates for next-generation sequencing, and operation of sequencing instrumentation. Candidates should have a strong publication record and ideally will have a history of obtaining research or instrumentation funding.

This is a research service position, and exceptionally qualified candidates must be highly motivated with demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral). Evidence of project and time management skills are as essential as technical knowledge and skills.
