About the Department and/or College

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has about 20 faculty, with research clusters in astrophyiscs, condensed matter, particle physics and additional activity in biophysics and physics education research. It offers BS, MS, and PhD.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Assist in production and evaluation of CMS detector silicon modules built at the APD-Lab
  • Take responsibility for selected parts of assembly process (e.g. gantry operations, wire bonding, encapsulation, dimensional measurements, etc.)
  • Assist in designing, developing, and testing hardware, software systems for silicon module assembly.
  • Participate in group efforts in problem analysis, preliminary and detailed design discussions, reviews, and integrations.
  • Proficient use of common software tools (Python, LabView, etc)
  • Monitor the stock of materials necessary for the module assembly, repair and construction of equipment and reorder materials as necessary.
  • Supervise students and interact collaboratively with other workers in the lab.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years experience; or a combination of education and/or related experience to equal six years.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Proficiency or willingness to gain proficiency in using various fabrication equipment.
  • Experience in designing and fabrication fixtures/jigs for unique small batch parts.
  • Familiarity with CAD and CAM software.
  • experience in designing components for fabrication or manufacturing.
  • Skill in using hand tools and measuring instruments.
  • Familiarity with general machine shop equipment and practices.
  • Interest in advanced manufacturing technologies and processes.
  • Experience in programming, operating, and maintaining CNC equipment is a plus.
