Job Summary

The Director, Data Acquisition & Governance is responsible for ensuring the integrity, security, and effective management of data across the organization. This role involves leading the strategic planning and execution of data governance and acquisition processes, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to define standards, and implementing policies that support data quality, compliance, and responsible data usage. The position requires a flexible approach to adapt to evolving priorities while fostering continuous improvement through best practice sharing, proactive risk mitigation, and the identification of automation opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive data governance framework for analytics and insights, ensuring alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements.

  • Lead the strategic planning and execution of data acquisition processes, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and data enablement strategies.

  • Define and maintain governance policies, standards, and best practices for data products, analytic products, business products, and analytic services.

  • Oversee the end-to-end data acquisition process, ensuring timely and efficient onboarding of new data sources into the business analytics environment.

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with data providers and vendors, negotiating data acquisition agreements and ensuring compliance with data governance policies.

  • Drive the operationalization of data governance forums, ensuring engagement across cross-functional teams.

  • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and internal governance policies, proactively mitigating risks related to data security and privacy.

  • Manage and coordinate a team of offshore reports, ensuring effective collaboration and communication to support data acquisition objectives and enhance operational efficiency.

  • Collaborate with IT, product teams, and analysts to implement data governance tools, metadata management solutions, and automation capabilities.

  • Develop and implement data acquisition frameworks and processes, ensuring data quality, accuracy, and completeness.

  • Provide training, documentation, and guidance to data stakeholders on governance best practices.

  • Lead efforts to monitor and optimize data acquisition workflows, identifying opportunities for process improvements and increased efficiency.

  • Advocate for data governance and acquisition capabilities that enhance self-service analytics while maintaining compliance and security.

  • Define KPIs and success metrics to measure governance and acquisition effectiveness and business impact.

  • Monitor implementation, identify gaps, and drive continuous improvements in governance and acquisition processes.

  • Document data acquisition processes and methodologies to support transparency, reproducibility, and continuous improvement within the team.

  • Stay informed on emerging data governance and acquisition trends, regulations, and technologies, ensuring the organization remains proactive and compliant.

  • Serve as the central governance point of contact for data and analytics teams, ensuring alignment between business needs and governance policies.

  • Comply with all laws, regulations, and policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

Who You Are

Minimum Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 8 years of experience in data governance, data acquisition, or related roles, with at least 3 years in a leadership position.

  • Strong knowledge of data quality frameworks, data governance principles, and data lifecycle management.

  • Experience with data governance and acquisition tools (e.g., Informatica Data Quality, Collibra, MonteCarlo).

  • Strong stakeholder management and ability to drive cross-functional collaboration across analytics, business, and IT teams.

  • Ability to define and implement governance and acquisition policies while balancing business agility and compliance.

  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and change management skills to drive governance and acquisition adoption.

Additional Desired Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience working in cross-functional teams within commercial, medical, and market access functions.

  • Knowledge of FAIR data principles and big data technologies.

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Data Management Professional, Data Quality and Governance Certifications).

  • Experience in leading large-scale data acquisition projects and initiatives.

  • Knowledge of agile development methodologies and experience in implementing them in data acquisition processes.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $177,100.00 - 328,900. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
