Mass General Brigham (MGB), a not-for-profit academic healthcare system established in 1994 by Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), provides a full continuum of care, encompassing two academic medical centers (AMCs), community and specialty hospitals, a managed care organization, a network of employed and affiliated physicians, community health centers, home care, home hospital, a health insurance plan, and other health-related entities. MGB is dedicated to advancing patient care, research, education, and community service through innovation, performance, and high-reliability across all components of our delivery system. Primary care is delivered by faculty members of the Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine of the Academic Medical Centers (BWH and MGH) and by community-based practitioners employed across the system's geography by the Mass General Brigham Medical Group (MGBMG). The primary care delivery system also comprises over 200 Advanced Practice Providers (APP) in our AMC practices, Community Health Centers, and MGB MG practice sites.
MGB seeks a visionary and strategic physician leader to serve as the inaugural Chief of Primary Care. This role presents a unique opportunity to shape the future of primary care within a premier academic health system while significantly improving the experiences of both patients and healthcare providers. The selected leader will be responsible for operational strategy, innovation and new care models, workforce development, and clinical care delivery for primary care practices across MGB's employed primary care groups, which include over 1,300 physicians, 103 clinical practices, and 2.7 million annual patient visits, serving more than 900,000 unique patients. This leader will play the leading role in advancing MGB's mission to provide high-quality, patient-centered care focusing on care delivery models, innovation, patient access, patient and provider experience, and population health needs, particularly for patients enrolled in Massachusetts Medicaid and Medicare Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).
Key responsibilities include developing and implementing innovative care delivery models to enhance patient access, improve quality and outcomes, and foster a culture of engagement, wellness, professional excellence, and career development among primary care providers. The Chief of Primary Care will report directly to the Executive Vice President/Chief Integration Officer, MGB and will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary leaders across the system, including but not limited to the MGB Chair of the Department of Medicine, the AMC Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, the MGB Medical Group President and COO, and the MGB Chief Population Health Officer.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Clinical Leadership and Oversight
- Oversee all clinical and operational aspects of primary care practices and providers across the health system to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Work collaboratively and closely with the AMC Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, who is responsible for faculty members' academic activities and advancement, and division administrative responsibilities, ensuring alignment of clinical work schedules and responsibilities to overall effort allocation within the division.
- In a culture of continuous innovation, learning, and improvement, champion the design and deployment of evidence-based care models and clinical practice to meet the needs of MGB patients, enable primary care providers to thrive, and enhance clinical outcomes and chronic disease management.
- Work with community hospital PCOOs, the MGBMG PCOO, and others to develop community-based residencies and clinical APP training in disciplines not currently offered within MGB's education enterprise, (e.g. family medicine).
- Create recruitment pathways and relationships to support clinician acquisition and retention.
- Work with clinical leaders of specialty services, including chairs, to ensure seamless care coordination, and collaboration on consultation needs and response, including e-consults and other innovative consultation modes.
- Ensure consistent approaches to quality, safety, patient experience, and patient outcomes, in collaboration with the MGB Chief Medical Officer, Chief Quality Officer, and Chief Population Health Officer.
- Ensure systems and expectations are in place for compliance with all governmental payor requirements to address social determinants of health and health equity reporting.
- Represent primary care leadership on system-wide committees and task forces.
Strategic Innovation and Care Transformation
- Drive innovation in primary care models and supporting infrastructure and technologies to meet patient needs. Focus on efficiency, effectiveness, and patient and provider experience.
- Identify the needs of the MGB patient population and the requisite specialty and subspecialty access (e-consults and in-person visits) required to meet primary care provider referral demand.
- Advance the use of virtual care, remote monitoring, and virtual-first care models to improve patient access and convenience.Capitalize on these care channels to offer variation and innovation in provider experience to enhance career satisfaction and longevity while improving patient access, responsiveness, and care experience.
- Lead initiatives to modernize care delivery through digital tools, including mobile apps, online scheduling, and patient engagement platforms.
- Identify external organizations, including AI and technology companies, community groups, and government agencies, as partnership opportunities to develop and test innovative solutions tailored to primary care needs, such as risk stratification, chronic disease management, and operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with data scientists and technology teams to integrate AI and machine learning tools for predictive analytics, population health management, and clinical decision support to enhance the experience of MGB primary care providers.
Quality and Performance Improvement
- Drive high-quality outcomes by ensuring patients' medical, psychological, social, and functional needs are met in a reliable and sustainable manner, consistent with system goals set in partnership with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer.

- Optimize performance in chronic disease management, population health, and value-based care.
- Create programs in conjunction with MGB PHSO that drives performance and achievement of all value-based contract goals for MGB's Medicaid, Dual Eligible, Medicare, and Commercial ACO populations.
- Monitor and enhance clinical, operational, and financial performance metrics, including access, patient satisfaction, and value-based contract performance, and provider productivity.
- Lead efforts to improve patient experience and ensure alignment with system-wide goals for patient-centered care.
- Maintain and nurture a culture of safety related to all patient care activities and venues.
Workforce Engagement, Development, and Training
- Attract, recruit, and retain top talent, motivate and engage the team, delegate effectively, and manage performance. Lead a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement to advance patient care.
- Create a data driven culture of performance and accountability regarding patient outcomes and experience.
- Champion initiatives to improve provider wellness, reduce burnout, and promote engagement among physicians and advanced practice providers.
- With responsibility for compensation for clinical primary care, work with other system leaders to restructure and modernize physician and APP recognition and rewards, including compensation models, incentives, and care segmentation.
- Through a high degree of visibility and direct contact, serve as a trusted advocate for physicians and advanced practice providers. Understand their challenges and work with urgency to address their needs, build trust, and ensure they feel supported in their work.
- Engage, coach, and inspire primary care physicians and advanced practice providers to adopt new approaches and technologies that improve the overall healthcare experience.
- Foster a culture of collaboration and professional development for primary care teams.
- Provide mentorship and leadership development opportunities for primary care providers.
- Develop and implement educational programs designed to equip medical directors with a comprehensive understanding of the business aspects of practice operations, including financial management, revenue cycle optimization, and strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate with academic partners to enhance primary care training programs, ensuring a robust pipeline of future primary care physicians and providers.
- Explore alternative primary care training pathways, introduction of family medicine residencies at MGB's community hospitals, and development opportunities for primary care advanced practice providers.
Qualifications:
- Medical Degree (MD or DO) with board certification in a primary care specialty (e.g., Family Medicine or Internal Medicine).
- Eligibility for licensure in Massachusetts.
- At least ten years of clinical experience in primary care, with a minimum of 3-5 years in a leadership role.
- Strong track record of improving clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, and patient satisfaction.
- Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.A collegial approach in interacting with other Mass General Brigham colleagues.
- Skilled in change management and fostering provider engagement.
- Demonstrated expertise in care innovation, population health, and value-based care.
