Job Description

Audio Visual Technician

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position exists in a school district and involves responsibility for the coordination, organization, implementation, evaluation and improvement of a school district's audio-visual services. Direct supervision is received from a higher level supervisor. The incumbent does not have any supervisory responsibility. Performs related duties as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Develops and updates annually a comprehensive short and long range plan for the purchase, use and maintenance of audio-visual equipment and supplies district wide;
  • Assists in developing and coordinating the district wide audio-visual budget for submission to a higher level Administrator;
  • Recommends audio-visual equipment and material purchases for the district;
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of district wide audio-visual equipment and supplies;
  • Distributes from a central supply unit needed audio-visual materials such as VCR tapes, projection bulbs etc. to all other schools;
  • Provides the facilities on a district wide basis for re-inking computer ribbons, copying discs and diskettes, preparing transparencies and 35 mm slides, and laminating;
  • Assists staff with operation of audio-visual and computer equipment, responds to basic hardware problems, and refers complex equipment problems to the appropriate staff;
  • Provides advice and training in the operation and use of audio-visual, video and computer equipment and in the development of related instructional materials to staff and student assistants (stage crew, audio-visual assistants and video trainees);
  • Provide facilities and time to tape off-air shows as well as events in the school Auditorium requiring sound, lights and video;
  • Provides preventive maintenance and timely repair of audio-visual equipment and refers to appropriate personnel for maintenance that they are unable to perform;
  • Maintains communication with appropriate personnel regarding repairs and keeps operative all computer software and hardware within the scope of expertise;
  • Assists in providing basic understanding of computer system operations and developing computer applications;
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of the use, operation and maintenance of a variety of audio-visual and computer equipment; good knowledge of the tools, terminology, and safety precautions involved in the maintenance of audio-visual and computer equipment; ability to keep accurate inventory and appropriate records; ability to work well with a variety of personnel regarding the production of audio-visual programs; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Job Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from a New York State registered two year college or university with an Associate's degree in Electronic Technology, Communication Technology or a related field and one year of experience in the repair, operation and maintenance of audio-visual equipment; OR
  2. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three years of experience as defined in (A) above; OR
  3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
