Business Overview

Included in Corporate and Shared Services are the business functions including Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal, Compliance, Corporate Development and Corporate Marketing. The Corporate and Shared Services teams work closely with all Novanta business units to support operating initiatives contributing to the organization's financial success.

Position Details

Summary

The position of Sr. Import Specialist will be responsible for overseeing the import process and ensuring all import transactions within the various Novanta Corporation businesses are processed compliantly and within the guidelines of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules and regulations. This role supports the Trade Compliance Director and requires the candidate to have the ability to understand and clearly communicate import classification rules and regulations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assists with the ongoing development and maintenance of the company trade compliance program.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of company policies and procedures.
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the import process, ensuring accurate import instructions are provided to carriers and brokers in a timely manner.
  • Resolve any discrepancies or issues related to invoices and shipping related to import shipments.
  • Work with the businesses to develop and implement import strategies to minimize costs and maximize efficiency.
  • Review and audit transactions for compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and internal procedures.
  • Review and classify products with accurate Harmonized Tariff Codes.
  • Review and determine Country of Origin for products.
  • Review and determine the eligibility of products for claims under Free Trade Agreements.
  • Assist in establishing and supporting a Duty Drawback Program for Novanta businesses.
  • Maintain updated knowledge of changing import laws and regulations.
  • Maintains applicable trade compliance records in accordance with regulatory requirements and internal procedures.
  • Interacts with internal company personnel to provide guidance on import requirements and participates in training and audit assessment programs to ensure implementation and effectiveness of internal controls.
  • Assists Trade Compliance Managers and Director with any government investigations or audits.

General Tasks

  • Manage Daily Imports
  • Provide HTS classification guidance
  • Manage Duty Drawback claims
  • Provide Guidance on Country of Origin
  • Review products for Free Trade Agreement eligibility

Required Experience, Education, Skills, Training and Competencies

  • 5+ Years working with International Import/Export Regulations; with hands-on experience handling import transactions and working with carriers and brokers.
  • Solid understanding of import/export documentation and compliance
  • Excellent Interpersonal, communication, and writing skills, including a strong ability to interact productively with all levels across the company.
  • Ability to learn quickly, works independently with minimal supervision, manage and prioritize multiple tasks and lead intermediate projects and investigations in a team environment.
  • Sound judgment, meticulous attention to detail, and excellent leadership skills.
  • Experience working with international customers and export control laws highly preferred.
  • Highly responsive and efficient; able to prioritize issues and execute multiple tasks daily.
  • Self-motivated, proactive approach with strong analytical skills and sound judgment.
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Travel Requirements

  • Less than 10%

Physical Requirements

  • Mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer
  • Ability to travel to the office as required
