Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Dean of Students is a unit in Student Affairs with a mission to provide support and assistance to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill community focused on empowering students, to succeed in navigating the University environment. Our four pillars -

Position Summary |
The Student Care Coordinator (
SCC) collaborates with Dean of Students (
DOS) and other campus colleagues to support students experiencing a wide range of personal and academic challenges as they navigate their Carolina experience. The
SCC meets 1-1 or in groups with students (in person and/or virtually) to connect them with resources and services to support their success including outreach, follow-up, advocacy, and resource connection.
Specific responsibilities may include the following:
1) Provide non-clinical case management services, including comprehensive and on-going following to students, faculty, staff, and families.
2) Support student access to and understanding of university resources, services, and policies as they may related to concerns including, but not limited to psychological health, physical health, economic concerns, social adjustment, or other manner of concern that interferes with a student's ability to function successfully at the University.
3) Collect, synthesize, and document all pertinent facts regarding referred students, their concerns, and situations.
4) Monitor and maintain up-to-date, accessible, and accurate student records on a timely basis.
5) Support other
DOS functions, including but not limited to concussion response, the University Approved Absence Office, and/or Carolina Veterans Resource Center.
6) Undertakes special projects and duties as needed or requested by supervisor.
This staff member will contribute to the daily functioning of and support for the Dean of Students office operations, programs, and initiatives, including responsibilities connected to food pantry ordering, inventory, pick-ups and/or deliveries, maintenance of print/electronic materials, triage of telephone calls and walk-in concerns, and meeting business and finance expectations. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Experience working with or supporting people in high need, challenging, complex, emotional, or stressful situations.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Demonstrated experience successfully using problem solving skills.
* Excellent customer service skills, in person and via phone/email.
* Demonstrated experience successfully managing confidential information.
* Excellent time management skills.
* Experience maintaining accurate records with high attention to detail.
* Valid NC Driver's License or eligibility to hold a valid NC Driver's License. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Professional experience working with college students in a higher education setting.
* At least one year of directly related professional experience working with or supporting people in high need, emotional, or crisis situations.
* Professional experience with non-clinical case management.
* Demonstrated skills in any number of support services areas, as: referral coordination, student advocacy, or crisis support.
* Demonstrated experience successfully building networks with colleagues.
* Experience in student data management systems (Advocate, Connect Carolina).
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Microsoft Office 365 applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Bookings.
* Significant coursework towards the completion of a degree in higher education, counseling, social work, student affairs, psychology, education, or other related field of study. |
Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
* Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds with or without accommodation.
* Ability to drive a state-owned vehicle on a limited basis, as directed by the supervisor. |
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
