Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The primary objective of the
UNCW Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment within which students, faculty, and staff can live, learn, and work. The department is comprised of three divisions - Support Services, Investigations, and Operations. The officers who staff these divisions are duly sworn, certified, armed, and empowered with the same authority as other local law enforcement officers in the State of North Carolina as regulated by the North Carolina Department of Justice. Telecommunicators, program managers and command-level personnel provide administrative support for the various divisions. The department also employs full-time and part-time security guards who assist community members by performing building patrols, area patrols, escorts, and access to other departmental services. |

Brief Summary of Work for this Position |
This Telecommunicator position performs technical communications work in support of public safety operations. Work involves receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, monitoring alarms, obtaining and relaying information, prioritizing calls/alarms and coordinating response procedures, dispatching appropriate public safety personnel, and maintaining public safety communications logs and databases. Telecommunicators are responsible for operating a variety of complex telecommunications and computer equipment, including multi-line phone systems, multi-channel police consoles, two-way radios, scanners, and Division of Criminal Information terminals. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. |
Preferred education, professional skills and experience |
- Knowledge of the integral workings of a law enforcement agency, in particular the dispatch aspect.
- Willingness to communicate and effectively get along with the public.
- Oral Communication skills are required. Knowing how to type is essential to being able to perform the job as Telecommunicator.
- Typing the Daily Police Bulletin, memos for officers, and some reports are all part of the Telecommunicator's responsibilities.
- Being able to communicate well with the public is a very important task. If a crime has been committed, it is important that the Telecommunicator get as many details as possible to pass on to the officer assigned to the call.
- The ability to rapidly check files in the computer is needed. The ability to listen for any radio traffic, telephone calls, and fire alarms and communicate with the person calling.
- The ability to read the written orders and read messages coming from agencies sending messages through the DCI Computer Terminal.
