Job Summary

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) receives daily assignments and functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse to carry out direct patient care responsibilities. All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and customer service. Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, other staff, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to age specific needs and cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $36.62 - $36.62 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma or successful completion of GED.
  • Medical Assistant Certification, Certified Nursing Assistant Certification and/or post high school vocational/ specialized medical training certificate or completion of one year nursing school. Current American Health Association BLS-C.
  • One year of hospital-related patient care experience.
  • Medical terminology. Computer skills. Strong verbal communication skills. Must be able to work as part of a team or independently. Ability to problem solve and prioritize demands preferred. Bi-lingual in Spanish or Southeast Asian languages preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sit: Up to 3 hours/day
  • Stand/Walk: 6-8 hours
  • Bend/Stoop: Up to 3 hours
  • Reach: Up to 6 hours
  • Rep Use of UE/Grasp: Up to 6 hrs
  • Lift/Push/Pull: 25lbs, over 25# with assistance or equipment

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Nursing Assistant Previous PCA / Nursing Assistant experience in an acute care setting Current nursing student who has completed a Medical Surgical rotation Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to the responsibilities of the job
