Join us as our new Sr. Research Associate (contract position)

Are you ready for a role that lets you use both your scientific and creative skills in a highly collaborative environment? As a Senior Research Associate you will be responsible for performing laboratory and pilot scale experiments to demonstrate benefits of enzymatic performance in food products and processes. Your experimentation results and process and product development insights will ultimately lead to innovative products and solutions implemented in the marketplace. This is a dynamic environment, and the type of experiments will shift based on demand. Responsibilities will include:

  • Prototyping - developing formulations and processes for making scalable plant-based dairy and meat products, functional foods and new protein ingredients with improved functionality.

  • Applying culinary techniques to deliver the best possible taste and texture experiences

  • Operation and maintenance of lab and pilot scale food processing equipment, including HTST/UHT equipment and other unit operations for making plant-based beverages and fermented products, plant-based desserts, plant-based meat alternatives, and functional food prototypes (nutritional bars and coated ingredients).

Become a part of a dynamic team of scientists and research associates with diverse backgrounds, providing customer-facing technical service to the Food and Beverage industry. This team supports a variety of North American customers across a range of food and ingredient product development applications.

In this role you'll make an impact by:

  • Supporting the implementation of enzymatic technology in customer products and processes

  • Independently carrying out laboratory or pilot scale support of customer projects and product development

  • Driving improvements to laboratory workflows and processes to increase efficiency and data quality

  • Ensuring traceability through strong documentation and reporting

  • Maintaining a safe and functional GMP laboratory space

  • Using knowledge of food formulation and processing to create prototypes to highlight the impact of enzymes

  • Displaying flexibility and ability to improvise according to customer needs

To succeed you must have:

  • AAS degree in a relevant technical discipline with 6+ years of relevant experience in a technical area or BS or MS degree in scientific discipline such as Food Science, and/or experience in food engineering. Culinary skills are a plus.

  • Knowledge of and basic experience with food formulation development, food GMP's, and food processing equipment (pasteurizing units, spray dryers, decanting centrifuges, extruders).

  • Ability to contribute to development of formulations and processes for food prototypes

  • Ability to independently plan and execute routine and non-routine laboratory experiments

  • Demonstrated success with attention to detail and time management

  • Initiative for completing tasks with a positive attitude and a sense of urgency

  • A desire to learn and develop new skills with a proactive approach

  • Strong laboratory techniques and knowledge as well as organizational skills

  • Ability to interpret and summarize data

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills

  • Strong ability to collaborate with cross-functional teammates

  • Ability to work in the United States currently and in the future without sponsorship

Location: Franklinton, NC. Role requires being on-site.

Expected salary range: $60,000-$111,000
