East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) has three (3) openings and invites candidates who have the appropriate qualifications to apply for these intern positions (part-time, typically ~15 hours a week during the school year and up to 40 hours a week during school breaks) in the following areas:
*Environmental Compliance Section of the Regulatory Compliance Office
*Workplace Health and Safety Section of the Regulatory Compliance Office
*Wastewater Technical and Emerging Issues
The Engineering Aide will assist professional engineering and technical personnel by performing the following typical tasks:
All Engineering Aides:
*Use PCs for preparing reports, memos, graphics, and databases.
*Presenting project findings and results (technical and non-technical) to management and other EBMUD staff.
Workplace Health and Safety Engineering Aide:
*Assisting in maintaining and organizing safety documentation, such as safety data sheets (SDS), training logs, and safety standard operating procedures (SOPs).
*Supporting internal audits and records preparation.
*Accompanying safety staff on jobsite visits to observe work practices and help record findings.
*Assisting with hazard identification and entry into tracking systems.
*Supporting the review of engineering drawings and technical specifications for construction or maintenance projects to identify health and safety implications.
*Supporting the documentation and tracking of incidents, near misses, and corrective action and assisting in compiling data for trend analysis and reports.
*Assisting in drafting safety bulletins, presentations, posters, and training support materials.
Environmental Health and Safety Engineering Aide:
*Supporting Green House Gas (GHG) inventory by researching and reporting on carbon credit utilization; scope 3 emission programs; annual report development.
*Supporting the trench soils investigation request process by reviewing request forms from other workgroups, assessing contaminated sites using databases, and drafting trench soils handling instructions on forms for use by staff.
*Supporting permit compliance reporting (water, air, waste).
*Assisting Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) compliance by reviewing guidelines, making recommendations for improvements, ensuring integrity of data used in annual reporting, and auditing program documentation for accuracy and completeness.
*Completing field inspections with staff for environmental compliance status and writing up findings.
Wastewater Technical and Emerging Issues Engineering Aide:
*Compiling and evaluating water quality data.
*Performing wastewater laboratory analyses.
*Gathering field data at treatment facilities.
*Performing statistical analysis on water quality parameters and treatment plant operations.

1.Completion of the twelfth grade, or its equivalent; and,
2a. Current enrollment in an undergraduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program, with completion of at least 60 semester units (90 quarter units); OR
2b. Current enrollment in a graduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program; OR,
2c. Recent completion (within 12 months) of an undergraduate or graduate level accredited engineering or related technical degree program.
The ideal candidate will have:
*Excellent command of spoken and written English.
*General computer skills including MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project, MS PowerPoint and Adobe.
*Computer programming, CAD and/or GIS experience is a plus.
*Water quality engineering coursework is a plus.
*Understanding of engineering economics and/or statistics.
If applying for Workplace Health and Safety:
*Proficiency in technical writing, data management, and safety communication tools, including technical writing of safety documentation.
*Coursework in occupational health & safety and engineering principles.
*Enrollment in an environmental or occupational safety technical degree program.
If applying to Environmental Compliance:
*Upper division course work in any of the following areas - Environmental Science; Environmental Regulation/Policy/Planning; Environmental Management; Environmental Engineering; Sustainability and/or related technical areas.
*Experience with reviewing and interpreting large complex data sets.
*Experience with reviewing protocols and/or regulations and summarizing key requirements and making recommendations.
*Enrollment in an environmental or occupational safety technical degree program.
If applying for Wastewater Technical and Emerging Issues:
*Hands-on laboratory experience through college courses or internships.
*Knowledge and experience with field work, including sample collection.
