APM Terminals
PURPOSE: Create and execute dynamic berthing and cargo management strategies that achieve optimal vessel, yard, and rail productivity. This is done through:
- Create flexible daily, weekly, monthly berthing and crane deployment plan
- Manage gate appointment rules, and create short-term and long-term receiving strategies to ensure customer demands can be achieved
- Analyze receiving and loading trends to ensure yard allocations are maximizing the container yard footprint, and adjust with seasonal trends
- Develop cost minded housekeeping plans which promote productivity across the entire terminal operation
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES/PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Direct and daily supervision of two or more clerical staff, including scheduling and assignment of daily work instructions, to ensure: (1) allocations are active and align with developed strategy, (2) static stowage instructions are executed efficiently, and (3) oversight of clerical staff manning yard details outdoors.
- Document and execute discipline if work is not being executed at expected standards. Such discipline includes written and final warnings, reduction of hours, suspension, and termination as appropriate.
- Prepare misconduct reports.
- Conduct annual performance reviews and prepare summary of same
- Monitor staff for potential safety violations and impose discipline for same.
- Review and act on requests for leave.
- Approve ILA payroll for clerical staff supporting the various planning functions
- Develop effective yard strategies and vessel berthing plans that allow for safe flow of cargo on terminal in accordance with the customer's expected port stay.
- Create dynamic export and empty allocation plans to be executed efficiently by the local operations execution teams
- Interface daily with customers and 3rd party agencies to communicate vessel berthing and loading plans, cargo receiving allowances, and order appropriate labor to achieve daily operations plans.
- Collect and analyze data sets to spot trends and take independent decision to adjust allocation and berthing plans accordingly
- Manage and create appointment strategies that promote operational excellence
- Constructively work with stakeholders to promote prompt and effective evacuation of cargo, manage equipment stock levels to ensure contractual allotments are not exceeded, and yard capacity remains at a safe operating level
- Use lean principles to remove waste from end-to-end operations
- Execute countermeasures to ensure capacity prearranged for evacuation matches stowage plan, and seek opportunities which allow for increased terminal throughput
- Evaluate workload and create equipment deployment plan to ensure overall labor effectiveness goals are sustainably achieved
- Work cross functionally to ensure preventive maintenance of facility and assets are scheduled for completion to allow support the business needs.
CRITICAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE Necessary to perform the requirements of the position:
- B.S. degree or relevant experience in supply chain logistics or terminal operations
- Advanced Microsoft Office Suite and Navis products
- Expertise with data collection and analysis
- Demonstrable analytical thinking, problem solving, and autonomous decision making on day one
- Have a continuous improvement mind set
- Ability to compose clear and concise verbal and written work instructions inclusive of developing effective processes and procedures for execution
- Work effectively as a team, exhibiting ability to motivate colleagues inclusive of union labor to generate and implement innovative ideas
- Participate and foster a collaborative environment with white and blue-collar workforce to ensure all terminal goals are achieved
- Ability to work non-traditional business hours inclusive of nights, weekends, holidays.
