Job Summary

THIS PERMANENT POSITION IS LOCATED IN SAN BERNARDINO, CA. Under general supervision, provides laboratory testing in the area of histology and performs serological tests, troubleshoot assays, prepare reagents and other supplies as necessary for conducting tests. The time % allotted to each activity will be distributed ~3/4 Histology and ~1/4 Serology. This time distribution, however, can be modified punctually by the supervisor as necessities arise in one section or the other. Responsible for full compliance with CAHFS quality system, and training additional personnel, as required. Participates in development activities with regard to new procedures and provides backup support to other laboratory sections.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No minimum education required.
  • Experience performing general laboratory procedures including calculate weights/volumes and prepare media reagents, maintain documents, accurate data entry in computer systems, produce clear and concise report results.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the language and underlying principles of Biology and Immunology, including ability to identify animal tissues (bone, eyes, skin, brain, etc), and ability to understand the written protocols associated with the preparation of histologic slides and serologic tests.
  • Skills to cut histological slides and perform hematoxylin and eosin staining and special stains as requested by pathologists; knowledge of the principles of immunohistochemistry and willingness to learn this technique within 6 months of appointment.
  • Knowledge to understand and learn to perform standard serologic assays including immunodiffusion, latex, micro agglutination, agglutination, hemagglutination, ELISA and others as needed.
  • Understanding and skills to organize work activity of a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, follow standard operation procedures with strict attention to detail, flexibility to adapt to a changing environment and workload, and work independently and efficiently in a high throughput laboratory under supervision to meet standard laboratory turnaround times.
  • Skills to provide record management of all work performed including filing of paraffin blocks, microscope slides, serum samples and others in numerical order, accurate organization of records and logbooks of histology and immunology results, and appropriate documentation associated with those tests with maintenance of confidentiality of client information.
  • Skills to perform literature searches and knowledge of one or several of virology, molecular biology, genetics, and immunology to read, understand and follow published or documented techniques and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, preferably in the Histology and/or Immunology section/s.
  • Skills to perform appropriate and cost-effective ordering and use of laboratory and/or office supplies and equipment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow laboratory/University safety protocols and instruct/monitor staff for same, including appropriate disposal of waste solvents and biohazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work in a quality system environment adhering to all policies and procedures that ensure the highest quality of laboratory testing.

Department Overview

CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies, and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
