Summary

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Chief Field Engineer for a project we have in Richmond VA. Reports directly to the onsite Superintendent and manages all Field Engineers, Instrument Men/Rodmen. The company representative is directly responsible for the development, installation and accuracy of Certified Project Control and all ensuing building layout derived there from, including stacked control on any high-rise structure. Accountable to the Superintendent for a timely and accurate layout of all activities necessary to ensure schedule commitments are being met. The Chief Field Engineer will be directly responsible for managing his time and scheduling his crew in accordance with the needs and direction of the Superintendent. He shall also be completely responsible for the accuracy of all benchmarks and control lines provided for others. Field notes and other related documentation are critical to the success of any project and must be kept in a secure place.

Essential Functions



  1. Corporate Survival - Financial indicators


    • Looks ahead and pre-plans.
    • Experienced in blueprint reading and has an understanding of the Contract Documents as a whole.
    • Has common knowledge of Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry and can accurately calculate dimensional data for layout.
    • Has common knowledge and can use surveying instruments, data collectors and must have basic computer skills.
    • Has a working knowledge of job site tolerances and checks work.
    • Jointly develops building control with Superintendent and takes initiative to install and have certified.
    • Maintains Field Notes and As-builts in an organized format.

    • Knowledge of SOP and Safety Policies/Procedures.
    • Ability to coordinate with Superintendent and Schedule layout crews to perform without delays.
    • Has good understanding of construction process and knows subcontractor layout.
    • All decisions are based on research.

    • Participate in submittals review.
    • Emphasis on quality.
    • Monitors subcontractors' work to ensure tolerances are being met.
    • Maintaining a good working relationship with Subs.

Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Most work occurs on construction sites. Due to daily condition changes on construction projects, when employees are outside of the office trailer or structure, they must wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required by the company's safety policies and as required for weather conditions.

Physical Abilities

Sitting 30 - 50% of time on job. Critical abilities: standing and walking 50 - 70% of time on job; climbing (stairs and ladders) average 10 times a day; stooping, kneeling, bending 20% of time on the job; repeated use of hands (typing, using hand tools, writing) 20% of time on the job; communicate (talking) 75% time on the job; hearing (phones, radios, alarms, general construction activity) 100% of time on the job; 20/20 vision (natural or with glasses or corrective lenses) and ability to detect small objects; able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (safety glasses, harnesses, hard hats, etc.) every day in required areas on the job; working at heights and in confined spaces 20% of time on the job; working in heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice = 20% of time on the job. Helpful abilities: able to lift 40 pounds or more; push and pull objects weighing 50 pounds or more; able to identify and distinguish between colors.

Education, Experience, and Knowledge



  • Technical training or coursework in surveying, civil engineering, or a related 7+ years of relevant years of experience in the construction industry may be substituted for formal education.
  • Basic survey skills and knowledge of the correct and safe usage of surveying instruments including total station and equipment.
  • Experienced in using surveying software such as TSI, SMI.
  • Experienced in blueprint reading.
  • Has common knowledge of Algebra, Ordinary Geometry, and Trigonometry and can accurately calculate dimensional data for layout.
  • Has a working knowledge of job site tolerances.
  • Able to organize people, tools, and equipment and plan/manage multiple activities to accomplish desired result.
  • Act in a manner of integrity that shows support for the company, its values, and the employees, while maintaining constant focus on meeting/exceeding customer requirements and expectations.
