Job Title: Health Unit Coordinator

Schedule: 7am-7pm - Day Shift PRN

Compensation: Starting at $17.00/hour - based on years of experience

Mary Free Bed at Covenant Health Care provides inpatient rehabilitation care for patients in the Saginaw and surrounding regions. Mary Free Bed RNs working in this location have the opportunity to receive support from both organizations and are expected to follow all applicable policies and procedures that apply to our work. In this job description, the term "Nursing Department" refers to all care and responsibilities that the nursing staff provide to the patients that we serve.

Summary

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) provides support for the physicians and team members within the rehabilitation hospital, focusing on efforts that improve flow of accurate information, promoting efficiency, and doing multiple activities to provide outstanding care to the patients that we serve.

Essential Job Responsibilities

* With key responsibilities for smooth, accurate, and timely patient flow, the HUC will accept calls and record patient information from patient placement regarding admissions and transfers, and enter pending and actual discharges, deaths, &/or transfers immediately into the EPIC system.

* Updating assignment sheets and validating staffing with schedules, assignment sheets and shift administrator or staffing coordinator. Assists in calling in and/or calling off staff as requested.

* Assists to accurately transcribe Physicians' Orders as per unit policy, completing all order entry procedures, forms, requisitions, and communications necessary to implement orders.

* Monitor &/or enter charges including sitters, isolation, and others as assigned.

* Initiates, assembles, and maintains the paper aspects of the patient chart, admission folders for patients, and thank you cards. Monitors location of chart at all times.

* Participates in patient care and unit activities to achieve compliance with all regulatory, patient safety, infection control and safety requirements.

* Prepares and transfers paper chart to HIM upon discharge or expiration of the patient.

* Answers patient call lights in a timely fashion and informs appropriate caregiver of the need.

* Assists with overall unit appearance including cleaning desk area, microwaves and refrigerators, monitoring and assisting with dirty utility room cleaning. Check & replace sharps containers, and isolation carts.

* Daily regulatory checks including refrigerator temperature checks, daily weights, restraint required documentation.

* Assists in Death/Restraint Reports with information going to Nurse Manager and Clinical Nurse Outcomes Specialist.

* Maintains appropriate levels of office supplies and patient education materials, ordering & stocking as needed.

* Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and families.

* Daily monitoring of Intake: BMs to report to nurse

* Daily lab check to ensure all ordered labs are completed

* Daily input into food acceptance flowsheet for all meals

* All other duties as assigned

Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement

Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.

Essential Job Qualifications

* Proficient utilization of Microsoft Office and ability to successfully learn other computer applications.

* Outstanding written and oral communication skills.

* Must be detail oriented with demonstrated ability to analyze multifaceted situations to determine appropriate course of action.

* Ability to work independently at a high level of efficiency; working independently to prioritize workload and meet deadlines given a high-volume workload with multiple interruptions

* Excellent customer service skills required.

* Able to maintain confidentiality
