S&ME is seeking a driven and enthusiastic individual who is eager to gain hands-on experience as a Geotechnical Staff Engineer based out of our coastal city office in Wilmington, North Carolina where you'll be supported and mentored by professionals and licensed engineers of different experience levels to learn and contribute to impactful projects throughout the East Coast.

As a Geotechnical Staff Engineer, you will have a variety of responsibilities, from coordination of field data collection to the supervision of field assignments for complex projects. You'll be responsible for evaluating samples, supporting data analysis, authoring geotechnical reports under the supervision of a licensed geotechnical engineer, and preparing scope and fee proposals for small to medium-sized projects.

What You'll Do:



  • Collaborate with Experts: Work alongside and under the supervision of project managers and licensed engineers with cost estimates, proposals, project timelines, field activities, and more.
  • Field Exploration: Coordinate drilling operations to collect soil samples, monitor drill rig efforts to obtain samples, soil classification, and prepare boring logs.
  • Data Analysis Support: Play a key role in supporting projects through in-depth data analysis, such as general settlement analysis, and seismic site class evaluations, and contributing to informed decision-making and project success.
  • Proposal & Report Preparation: Contribute to the preparation of project proposals and reports to confirm client expectations and needs are met. Create detailed reports with findings, insights, and recommendations for project development.
  • Client Interaction: Provide project and client support by interacting effectively on project updates, participate in local committees and organizations, and participate with leadership in business development events.



What We're Looking For:



  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
  • 1 or more years of experience in geotechnical engineering
  • A basic working knowledge of construction plans and specifications
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and MicroStation, with the ability to learn commercial software applications
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, a strong work ethic, and possess the ability to work as a team player
  • An Engineering Intern (EIT) certification or on the path to obtaining



What to Expect:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:



  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions and standing for potentially 8-12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
  • Travel out-of-town for assignments and work outside of normal business hours when necessary
