General Purpose

The Fraud Investigator is the first level in the Fraud Investigator series. While working under close supervision, the Investigator researches possible cases of fraud through various tools using standard banking practices and procedures regarding possible fraud scenarios.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • As the front line for the department, performs a variety of clerical tasks to include answering phones, referring phone calls, and working directly with bank employees to answer questions that are able to be answered immediately.
  • Researches cases of fraud through various in-house tools such as Yellowhammer, Visa Risk Manager and Pulse.
  • Acquires and analyzes information on suspected fraud cases.
  • With guidance, reviews and investigates referrals of suspicious accounts and transactions from any members of the front line/back office team.
  • Assists on investigations on suspected cases of fraud and fraud scenarios while ensuring compliance with Alpine Bank's policies and procedures.
  • With guidance from the supervisor and team members, completes investigation Information and Detailed Notes fields within the Fraud Tracking Database in order to provide a complete summary of the overall fraud investigation.
  • Promotes a risk-aware culture, ensures efficient and effective risk and compliance management practices by adhering to required standards and processes.
  • Researches and files debit card disputes within guidelines of Regulation E.
  • Regular and Reliable attendance is required as an essential function of this position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:



  • With guidance, ability to make independent decisions and developing solid judgement.
  • Basic understanding of how to recognize fraud scenarios and fraud structures, and conduct investigations.
  • Familiar with standard banking concepts, practices, and procedures regarding possible fraud scenarios.
  • Ability to handle upset customers, and knowledge of when to refer the customer to a supervisor or senior staff when the issue becomes challenging.
  • Knowledge of Personal Computer (PC) skills, including Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Skill in research and problem resolution.
  • Ability to assist other Alpine Bank Fraud staff.
  • Ability to understand banking security related regulations, policies and procedures, and, with guidance, the ability to analyze account characteristics to assess potential risk.


Education or Formal Training:



  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or similar preferred.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Colorado Driver's License required.


Experience:



  • One (1) year of fraud detection/investigation experience preferably in a banking environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year to year basis.


Working Conditions

Working Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. Travel to conferences, meetings and branch locations may be required.

Physical Activities:

These are representative of those which must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Employee also may have to lift up to 25 pounds.

Starting Rate of Pay is between $19.75 and $24.75 per hour, depending on experience.
