Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, a leading global law firm with offices in major commercial, legal, and governmental hubs worldwide, is seeking a Supervisor (or Manager) of Business Operations for its firm-wide Operations Team.

Reporting to the Director of Client Value, Pricing, and Revenue Management, the Supervisor/Manager of Business Operations plays a critical leadership role in managing key operational functions that support the firm's profitability, pricing strategy, and client service delivery. This role blends people leadership, operational execution, and strategic planning, managing business operations professionals and NBI specialists, while also spearheading process improvements, analytics, and cross-departmental collaboration.

The ideal candidate is a strong people manager with a background in legal or professional services, experienced in rate administration, financial analysis, and operations management, with a focus on building scalable systems and high-performing teams.

This position will reside in our Philadelphia office with a hybrid in-office/remote working schedule.

Primary Functions and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management

  • Supervises Business Operations professionals and NBI Specialists with a focus on rate administration, client/matter setup, and process governance.

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with firm policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, training, assigning work, managing performance, and resolving employee issues.

  • Leads by example, establishes direction and priorities, balances workload across the team, communicates expectations clearly, and fosters a collaborative team culture.

  • Provides coaching, performance feedback, and development opportunities; regularly evaluates and recognizes staff accomplishments.

  • Facilitates regular team meetings and develops agendas aligned with operational priorities and strategic goals.

Client Value & Revenue Management Support

  • Oversees accurate client/matter setup in Elite 3E, ensuring fee arrangements, billing instructions, and pricing structures are correctly applied.

  • Manages rate exceptions and aged discrepancies; supports strategic fee arrangements to ensure profitability and compliance.

  • Collaborates with attorneys and stakeholders on RFP responses, pricing proposals, and special billing arrangements.

  • Drives the implementation of matter management protocols and supports enforcement of client guidelines.

Strategic Operations

  • Develops and implements operational strategies that drive efficiency, scalability, and consistency across rate management, NBI, and matter management processes.

  • Partners with leadership across Billing, New Matter/Client Intake, Compliance, Finance, and Business Development to align operations with broader firm goals.

  • Manages overall administrative operations within the function, including project intake, process redesign, and systems enhancements.

  • Leads or supports cross-functional initiatives related to client/timekeeper/rate setting, and client value strategies.

Financial & Analytical Support

  • Supports financial performance evaluation as well as the firm's bi-annual collections drive and assists in the annual client billing rate-setting process.

  • Provides insights to firm leadership and practice heads on operational performance, offering recommendations to improve client outcomes and firm profitability.

  • Develops and maintains dashboards, models, and reports to support matter planning, rate governance, and budgeting.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Coordinates with IT and operations teams to test and implement system enhancements (e.g., Elegrity, Elite 3E, Cosine) that improve data integrity and operational workflow.

  • Proactively identifies opportunities to streamline operations and reduce administrative overhead.

  • Establishes and adheres to department budget; seeks cost efficiencies through technology and process optimization.

Other Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the management and implementation of practice-wide and department-wide initiatives.

  • Drives or supports presentations to firm leadership regarding strategic initiatives, operational performance, and department updates.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, or related discipline.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a business or financial analysis role, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.

  • Experience in a law firm or professional services environment strongly preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Deep understanding of rate structures, legal billing practices, and pricing concepts (e.g., AFAs, market benchmarking).

  • Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and guide high-performing teams.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel; strong familiarity with Word, PowerPoint, and Access.

  • Proficiency in financial/matter management systems such as Elite 3E, Workday, and Elegrity; knowledge of reporting tools (e.g., Qlik, Power BI, Tableau) is a plus.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas clearly to diverse stakeholders.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
