Job Summary

GateWay Community College invites applications for the position of Dean of Student Engagement and Retention. This key leadership role is an in person/on campus position that provides strategic direction and administrative oversight for programs and services that enrich the student experience, promote student development, and drive academic and personal success.

Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Dean plays a pivotal role in fostering a student-ready culture that ensures equitable access, educational excellence, and a holistic approach to student support. The Dean is charged with planning, implementing, assessing, and continually improving a comprehensive range of student-centered services that support retention, engagement, and achievement.

  • Recruiting, Outreach & Contact Center Operations

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and innovative leader who is data-informed, equity-minded, and passionate about serving diverse and nontraditional student populations. They will model and cultivate a culture of belonging, service excellence, and teamwork, while demonstrating a strong commitment to student success, co-curricular engagement, and campus-wide collaboration.

Essential Functions

50% -Leadership and Oversight:
  • Provide direct supervision and strategic leadership for the following departments: Academic Advising & Career Services, Student Life & Leadership, Veteran Services, and Recruiting & Outreach/Contact Center.
  • Offer visible and accessible leadership, serving as a champion for student needs and fostering a welcoming and student-centered environment.
  • Plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate staff performance to ensure high-quality service delivery and accountability.
  • Collaborate closely with Enrollment Management to address recruitment and retention challenges using innovative and student-centered approaches.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and assessment of college-wide student affairs programs and initiatives.
  • Lead long-range strategic planning and program development aligned with institutional goals and student success priorities.
  • Prepare and manage departmental budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with college priorities.

20% - Administration of Student Services:
  • Coordinate an integrated system of student services that supports the college's mission, vision, and strategic goals
  • Incorporate MCCCD's student success initiatives, including Guided Pathways, into departmental planning and programming
  • Ensure policies, procedures, and student services processes reflect best practices and meet regulatory requirements
  • Develop and implement high-impact programs to enhance campus life, including student leadership development, co-curricular engagement, cultural programming, and support for student organizations
  • Monitor compliance with all applicable local, state, federal, and district regulations and policies. To include, but not limited to Title IX, FERPA, Title VI, and Clery Act.

20% - Data-Driven Decision Making:
  • Foster a culture of evidence-based practice by leveraging data dashboards and developing tools to assess key performance indicators
  • Design and execute data-informed retention and engagement strategies that directly impact student persistence and academic success
  • Collaborate with campus departments-Academic Affairs, Athletics, the President's Office, faculty, and advising-to identify and support at-risk students through proactive interventions
  • Track and analyze student success metrics such as persistence, engagement, and graduation rates; provide actionable insights and regular reporting to senior leadership
  • Support the development, implementation, and assessment of co-curricular learning outcomes and the first-year experience, transfer, online, and re-enrollment initiatives

10% - Representation and Professional Development:
  • Serve as a key representative for Student Affairs on campus, within the district, and in the broader community
  • Participate in committees, events, and initiatives that enhance student engagement and institutional effectiveness
  • Lead professional development and training opportunities for staff, promoting a culture of innovation, growth, and continuous improvement
  • Build strategic partnerships with community organizations to expand student access to internships, volunteer experiences, and community engagement programs
  • Support a culture of collaboration by fostering effective communication among students, faculty, staff, and administration
  • May assist with grant development and administration, as applicable
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Student Affairs and other non-academic pathway: Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in education or field related to area of assignment and four years of progressively responsible management and/or leadership experience in field of assignment that includes two years of supervisory experience. Examples of student affairs academic support management/leadership experience includes: program management, project management, budget development and management related to programs or projects, staff supervision, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance. No degree equivalency.

OR

Minimum Qualifications for Academic pathway: Master's Degree in a teaching field related to area(s) of assignment and four years of experience in an academic leadership and/or supervisory role in higher education and three years of teaching that includes curriculum/coursework development. Examples of academic leadership/supervisory experience includes: division/department chair, project management, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance, committee leadership, program director, and shared governance. No degree equivalency.

Desired Qualifications

A. Doctoral degree in Community College/Organizational Leadership, Higher Education Administration, or related field
B. Two or more years of supervisory experience developing and evaluating staff in the following student services areas of a higher education institution: (Academic Advising & Career Services, Recruiting and Outreach, Student Life/Leadership, Veteran Services, or other Student Services department.)
C. Three years of experience leading, developing, implementing and/or assessing retention based student success initiatives for students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, perspectives and/or cultures
D. Experience in student conduct, and grievance processes to include managing confidential student information with discretion and supporting student interventions
E. Experience working with and enforcing applicable laws, regulation, policies and procedures with Title IX, FERPA, Title VI, and Clery Act
F. Experience with management of operational budgets across multiple programs in public education
G. Experience with program review and assessment of student learning
