Position Highlights

Research, Innovation & Impact (RII) Core Facilities at the University of Arizona is in search of an Electron Microscopy Technician. This position delivers services in the Imaging Cores - Electron (ICEL) to support internal users (faculty, research staff, postdocs and students) and external clients in a wide variety of research projects. Primary responsibility will be to facilitate electron microscopy (EM) sample processing and ultramicrotomy, and will work closely with the core manager and users to prepare samples for TEM imaging and analysis. This position will be responsible for performing skilled laboratory procedures involved in the EM processing workflow of biological samples, using routine and specialized techniques, including resin embedding, ultramicrotomy, negative staining and immuno-EM.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operates and manages laboratory equipment and conducts technical components of research projects following supervisor instructions according to established plan.
  • Receives and processes samples and perform sectioning or assist users in sample preparation for TEM imaging or training for samples sectioning following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including resin embedding, ultramicrotomy, immuno-EM and negative staining techniques.
  • Keeps lab organized and maintains lab records for efficient sample prep and ultramicrotomy workflows.
  • Prepares stock solutions, manages inventory and ordering supplies according to established procedures.
  • Contributes to ensuring compliance of regulatory organizations at the University of Arizona to maintain safety standards on usage and disposal of chemicals and reagents.
  • Communicates with facility users, and use iLab Operation Software to perform tracking sample preparation of research projects and services accordingly.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Working knowledge of general lab instruments.
  • Ability to quickly learn new lab skills.
  • Organization, attention to detail and ability to follow written protocols.
  • Basic knowledge of histology.
  • Skills for effective communication.
  • Basic computer literacy.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High
    school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required and a
    minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of
    education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences or equivalent advanced learning attained though experience.
  • Prior experience performing standard techniques for EM.
