Job Summary

Milwaukee Public Schools seeks exceptional Instructional Coach - Mathematics (Grades PreK - Grade 5) candidates who are highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders.

The Early Childhood and Elementary Math Instructional Coach is a non-evaluative, non-supervisory teacher-leader position. This individual will collaborate with district math staff, school-based leadership and educators to support the effective implementation of district-adopted math curricula and instructional resources, aligned with the goals of the MPS Ambitious Instruction plan. The coach will leverage expertise in math state standards, developmentally appropriate practices, culturally responsive pedagogy, and data analysis to provide technical assistance and professional learning to teachers in K3 through Grade 5, with the goal of supporting the planning and delivery of high-quality mathematics instruction resulting in increased student achievement. Qualifications

Eligible candidates must have:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful, fully licensed teaching experience in early childhood classrooms, defined as birth to 3rd grade, as a certified general or special education teacher OR elementary education, defined as Kindergarten-Grade 5, as a certified general or special education teacher.
  • A valid lifetime teaching license in one of the following developmental levels:
    • Early Childhood Special Education
    • Early Childhood/Middle Childhood
    • Middle Childhood/Early Adolescence
  • Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring other educators in mathematics teaching and learning at the school level (e.g. committee chair, grade level chair, mentoring new teachers, or leading professional learning)
  • Completion of additional coursework beyond a bachelor's degree in mathematics education at the early childhood or elementary level. Coursework may have been completed through a master's or doctoral program, or through MPS-sponsored initiatives such as the Strong Start Early Mathematics Leadership Program or the Leading Math Project (PK/5).

Candidates with the following education, skills, or experience are preferred:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field, such as Master of Science Curriculum and Instruction, Mathematics Education Leadership or Elementary/Middle School Mathematics Education.
  • Fluent knowledge of the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards (WiMELS) for mathematics and the Wisconsin State Standards for Mathematics for Kindergarten to Grade 5.
  • A clear and consistent commitment to professional growth in early childhood and elementary mathematics education.
  • Proven experience in designing and delivering mathematics professional development for early childhood and elementary teachers at the district level.
Responsibilities

  • Designs and models lessons that support district goals and state standards.
  • Works shoulder-to-shoulder with classroom teachers to support the implementation of district-identified mathematics instructional materials and initiatives through culturally responsive practices.
  • Designs and facilitates professional development at the district, school, and grade/department.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends in early childhood education and high-quality teaching of mathematics for our youngest learners.
  • Communicates information to and from schools/teachers and MPS. departments/divisions on school efforts to implement academic intervention strategies and student progress.
  • Understands, monitors, and supports implementation of developmentally appropriate and practices and district-adopted curriculum with fidelity.
  • Analyzes, interprets, and utilizes data to drive coaching conversations with teachers.
  • Maintains professional knowledge of coaching approaches and strategies.
  • Participates in school-based professional learning community meetings and assists in the development and implementation of School Improvement Plans.
  • Builds trusting relationships with teachers and school leaders to facilitate change, plan strategically, and distribute leadership.
  • Works collaboratively with teachers, other district level coaches, and district and school leaders; provide effective, formative feedback.
  • Accurately maintains and shares calendars, schedules, and records; efficiently completes paperwork and assignments.
  • Attends mandatory trainings that may fall outside of regular work schedule.
  • Independently manages multiple key initiatives and achieve identified results.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

The Instructional Coach - Mathematics (Grades PreK - Grade 5) salary schedule starts at $60,987.04 and increases according to the set salary schedule based on education beyond the required bachelor's degree and previous years of fully-licensed K-12 teaching experience.

Salary range: $60,987.04 - 114,217.31 (1D - 200-day calendar)
