Organizational Unit Overview |
University Communications (UC) translates East Carolina University's message into strategic and compelling collateral through its units: News Services, Creative Services and University Marketing. UC provides strategic communication and marketing guidance and support to the university.
News Services is responsible for the university's main website content, photography, news releases, storytelling, official social media accounts, videos and East magazine. News Services manages media relations and internal and external strategic communication on behalf of the university. The unit reports and disseminates information about events, activities, research, policies, individuals and alumni of the university.
Creative Services works with all university departments to conceptualize, design and produce written, print, digital and web projects to communicate and market messages to appropriate audiences while maintaining university brand standards. Creative Services serves as the authority for brand management and reviews logo and trademark usage. Creative Services provides strategic marketing guidance and support to enhance the knowledge, understanding, appreciation and support of the university and its work with broad and varied constituencies, from prospective and current students to thought leaders, prospective donors and the public.
The university website is managed by a dedicated team through Creative Services. Services include full site development, maintaining the university site and other subsites, consultation, and web-related troubleshooting for departments. The university's mass email marketing system is managed by the web team. A focus of the web team is identifying and establishing accessibility within the university website and electronic communications.
University Marketing provides strategic advertising and marketing guidance for the university, with intentional focus on enrollment strategies. University Marketing is responsible for performing all external advertising buys for the university. The department also collaborates with university constituents on licensing and branding efforts. |
Job Duties |
20% Consulting/Advising:
Identify customer needs to plan and manage multi-faceted and specialized projects and timelines from creation through delivery of final product.
Advise, collaborate and consult with clients, including department heads and their leadership staff, in a variety of ways including face-to-face, virtual. phone, and email to assist with the development of communication plans for web-based marketing and public relation activities. Plan will include ways to gauge effectiveness through monitoring web usage and providing statistics for management and assessment reporting. Present plan to client and other involved parties in a face-to-face environment to receive feedback and further understand client needs. Take the lead on new client projects with little to no supervision. Attend all client meetings and consults guiding clients through best practices.
20% Knowledge Technical/Professional:
Determine, use, and incorporate various standard and specialized hardware and software packages to design and manage programs and projects. Conduct individual and group face-to-face training university personnel on the use of various software packages. Serve as a resource to others by researching and identifying new technology to be used and purchased to creatively and innovatively achieve the mission and goals of the Division. Mentor teammates on new technical platforms and help them troubleshoot technical issues. Ensure alignment of all of ECU's websites and emails to be
ADA compliant. Take the lead on transitioning the university to a new digital platforms from web to email tools.
10% Communication Oral/Written: Assimilate, compose, and edit written material for use in a variety of outlets including websites and clients for final release. Establish, build and maintain solid relationships with clients and customers with requests and projects to develop and recommend communication strategies to empower the client to communicate program information to targeted audiences through visually appealing and user-friendly websites
50% Project Management:
Responsible for designing and maintaining all university websites using
software such as WordPress, Photoshop, Illustrator, and lnDesign. Utilizing technology to merge audio/video productions with existing websites; managing links and cross-promotions with other sites; and implementing interactive forms. Ensure that all departmental websites are institutionally and federally compliant and meet the needs of a broad audience. Assist Director of Creative Services in managing workflow for the web design/services team.
This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) under the ECU FWA Policy.
This position requires the employee to reside within a reasonable commutable distance of the ECU main campus.

Minimum Education/Experience |
Associate degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration, Networking Technology, or related area and one year of experience in the information technology field related to the position's role; or Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year experience in the information technology field related to the position's role; or Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, math or engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Journey level requires an additional one year of experience. Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
- Experience with Web CMS and responsive design
- Ability to write HTML Code and adapt existing software and graphics to meet University requirements.
- Hands on development experience with CSS3, HTML5, JavaScript and JQuery.
- Skilled in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Bridge and Illustrator).
- Training in CommonSpot web editing software or other large scale web content management system.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to accurately and thoroughly communicate using logic, clarity of thought, persuasiveness, and creativity.
