Compensation Details |
Starting salary is dependent on education, directly related experience and internal equity. After completing the second probationary semester, the potential exists to earn additional compensation by teaching overload and spring/summer sessions. This additional compensation varies based on several factors, including educational level and step. For example, a faculty member with a Master' s degree at Step 0 who teaches 10 hours of overload during the fall and winter semesters would earn an additional $18,000. Teaching during the spring/summer sessions would also generate additional compensation beyond the base salary. Excellent benefits package.

Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job: Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the
NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications. In addition, faculty have the following key responsibilities which are described more fully below in the Essential Duties/Major

Specific Teaching Assignment: Faculty member will be responsible for teaching courses in Early Childhood Education, adhering to the stated course objectives, content, and delivery. Working with the Early Childhood Education Coordinator, the instructor:
* Provides instruction in early childhood education theory and practice to a diverse student population within the Early Childhood Education Program.
* Plans, develops, evaluates and revises curriculum in early childhood education.
* Prepares for teaching by developing current syllabi, examination and learning activities.
* Plans and develops instruction to be delivered in both classroom presentations and through alternate delivery formats as appropriate to student needs and subject matter requirements.
* Creates supportive learning environment in the classroom and outside of this venue by being responsive to students' academic needs.
* Provides for on-going assessment of curriculum implementation, applicability of field learning experiences, and progress of individual students through the program courses.
Supervisory Responsibility: Faculty are sometimes called upon to perform quasi-supervisory responsibilities. |
Minimum Requirements |
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development or related field from an accredited institution.*
- Three years of experience teaching young children (birth - age 8) in a licensed early childhood setting.
- Experience with use of computer-based instruction, such as: distance learning, learning management software (Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Angel, etc.), and/or modularized courseware. Ability to apply such knowledge to teaching.
- Evidence of current CA/NR (child abuse and neglect) clearance from Michigan Department of Human Services or ability to obtain prior to hire.
- Must be able to pass a national criminal background check (fingerprint), per the State of Michigan, prior to hire.
- Strong Understanding and use of the Google Suite of Office Tools
- Evidence of continuing professional development in early childhood and/or special education, and in teaching.
- Must be able to demonstrate evidence of successful teamwork in a professional environment.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds (size of a pre-school child).
- Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission and philosophy.
- Innovative, flexible and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Technology Skills: Ability to integrate computer applications into teaching.
- Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and college objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain collegial relationships with students, peers, staff, and administrators; skill in oral and written communication.
* A foreign degree must be certified, at the candidate's expense, by a professional evaluation service. |
Additional Desirable Qualifications |
Additional Preferred Qualifications: 1. Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, or Child Development from an accredited institution.
2. Recent teaching experience in the early childhood field at the college level (minimum of 5 classes within the past 3 years).
3. Two years full-time experience in an administrative position in a licensed early childhood setting.
4. Graduate coursework in special education and/or elementary education.
Unique Aspects of Job: Fast-paced environment interacting with multi-cultural students with varied educational backgrounds. This position is in a program that receives funding from the Perkins grant; therefore, incumbents must maintain necessary credentials as a condition of employment. The faculty in this position will be required to teach multiple online and/or hybrid courses, and must be willing to travel to extension sites or alternate locations for hybrid courses and site visits. |
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions |
Physical Requirements: 1. The employee must be able to move about 2/3 of the time and be stationary about 1/3 of the time. S/he is required to be mobile around campus for participant involvement/activities.
2. S/he must be able to converse with individuals on a regular basis with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret their needs via phone conversations, face-to-face conversations, or written documentation.
3. The employee must be able to utilize all programs on a computer independently and efficiently (particularly the internet, Word, and the student database).
4. S/he must be able to present information in an instructional setting and respond to questions from groups.
5. If applicable, must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals which are common to the industry. Must be able to handle and mix chemicals properly and safely; and wear appropriate gloves and other personal protective equipment. |
Work Schedule |
Hours/Schedule: Although full-time faculty are obligated to teach during fall and winter, the nature of their full-time job requires them to perform many of their professional responsibilities year-round.
Faculty are required to maintain engagement hours and will make additional provisions for student consultations as may be necessary and reasonable. |
