Position Summary
Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs for Health and Well-being and as a critical member of the Health and Well-being umbrella unit, the Director of Services for Students with Disabilities will lead the unit's progress on moving beyond compliance and toward seamless access and holistic health and wellness. The Director leads Services for Students with Disabilities, a unit within Health and Well-being. The Director meets with and advises students with disabilities and those who believe they may have a disability, discusses the accommodation process, and fosters and maintains strong consultative and collegial relationships with faculty and staff. The Director ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and oversees and manages services and programs on campus for students with disabilities to maintain equal access under federal, state, and local law to promote student success. This position is responsible for all disability services pertaining to students, including the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to the provision of services under the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The Director will read and evaluate all documentation related to accommodation requests, make recommendations for appropriate accommodations, provide and coordinate disability services across the university, provide direct support to students, work closely with appropriate offices on campus, and serve as the campus resource person on disability issues for students.

Leadership

  • Directs daily operations of Services for Students with Disabilities to ensure equal access for students with disabilities to all aspects of campus life (programs, services, and activities) as outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Modifies, as needed, operational procedures and infrastructure for the Services for Students with Disabilities department, including but not limited to the Operations Manual, record/data management systems, outreach and education plans, and assessments
  • Provides administrative oversight, management, and facilitation of the provision of reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities
  • Maintains confidentiality and compliance with federal, state and local regulations
  • Leads budget forecasting efforts and maintains a balanced budget for unit
  • Researches and purchases assistive technology
  • Maximizes the efficiency and effectiveness of services for individuals seeking accommodations and elevates concerns as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Provision of Student Support

  • Works with offices across campus and community resources to meet the needs of students with disabilities
  • Meets individually with students, actively listens to their concerns, and assists them in prioritizing and problem-solving
  • Serves as a resource to students, faculty, staff, and others who may need assistance managing a wide range of questions and concerns, including, but not limited to, their rights and responsibilities as it relates to students' disabilities and accommodations
  • Responds appropriately to confidential matters and refer to other support resources as needed.
  • Strategizes with students on appropriate communication with faculty, staff, and other students
  • Assists with answering questions from faculty, staff, families, students, and the community
  • Provides outreach to students who have personal and/or academic concerns
  • Serves, alongside Assistant Director of Students with Disabilities, in a rotation schedule to assist walk-in students.
  • Reviews various forms of medical, psychological, and academic documentation to determine a student's eligibility and the necessary reasonable accommodations within classrooms and campus housing
  • Schedules and coordinates auxiliary services, such as ASL interpreters and other professional services required for student accommodations


Consultation, Outreach and Education

  • Serves as a consultant for faculty and staff to assist with the implementation of accommodations and provides recommendations and guidance for accessibility services across campus to maintain equal access for students with disabilities
  • Distributes accommodation information to faculty and staff members, as appropriate
  • Assists faculty and staff - through individual consultation, group training, and presentations - in understanding their roles in the accommodation process
  • Liaises with faculty and staff, including but not limited to deans, associate deans, and the testing center coordinator, to ensure students are provided their accommodations
  • Develops and disseminates clear communication and guidance to various stakeholders, including students, faculty, and staff
  • Trains faculty, staff and students on inclusive practices
  • Contributes to campus accessibility by serving on committees and task groups
  • Commits to integrated health and wellness
  • Partners with health and wellness staff members to develop outreach and educational programs
  • Supports holistic student wellness and development

Compliance

  • Spearheads efforts to create a more accessible and supportive campus climate
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and other appropriate laws pertaining to higher education compliance and disability
  • Works closely and collaboratively with units to ensure compliance with federal laws for those with disabilities
  • Handles confidential and sensitive information appropriately


Strategic Planning and Assessment

  • Leads the unit's strategic program planning and assessment work
  • Using a data-informed approach to align all efforts with the University's strategic goals, commitments, and tactics

Department Required Skills

  • Minimum of a master's degree in social work, counseling, human services, higher education/student affairs administration, psychology, special education, or a related field of study
  • Strong knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and other appropriate laws pertaining to higher education compliance and disability
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience providing direct service to students with a wide range of disabilities within a postsecondary institution is required
