Summary

The MIL Corporation is seeking a Shipboard Fiber Technician (Engineering Technician II) to support a US Navy client in San Diego, CA and other shipyard locations. The Shipboard Fiber Technician will work in an industrial shipyard environment to rip out, install, terminate, label, test, troubleshoot, and certify shipboard fiber optic cables, supporting the Alteration Installation Team (AIT) as needed.

This position currently requires an on-site schedule with 5 days on-site. Schedule is subject to change based on company/contract requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Install, splice, terminate, label, test, troubleshoot, and certify fiber optic cables aboard naval ships per military standards and US Navy standard items.
  • Use test equipment (OTDR, power meter/laser source, voltmeters, amp meters, megaohm meters, power analyzers, fiber light loss meters) for in-process and final testing.
  • Read and interpret customer work item instructions, drawings, cable routing diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Troubleshoot and repair damaged or non-conforming fiber and cable assemblies to meet customer specifications.
  • Document and maintain detailed test and inspection records.
  • Ensure proper setup and calibration of termination and test equipment.
  • Use common installation power and hand tools (saws, drills, hole punches, levels, crimpers, fusion splicers, conduit benders) safely and efficiently.
  • Work in high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions; climb ladders, work aloft or over vessel sides, and operate in confined spaces.
  • Lift, carry, and transport equipment and boxes (minimum 30 lbs, up to NIOSH limits); walk, stand, sit, bend, stretch, reach, squat, and twist for extended periods.

Travel

Expected travel is at least 50% to various shipyards.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of US Navy shipboard experience
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Physical ability to stand, kneel, crouch, climb ladders and scaffolding, and work in high places or confined spaces
  • Experience with NAVSEA standard concepts, policies, and procedures in electronics repair, fabrication, and installation
  • Skilled in reading and complying with blueprints, sketches, technical instructions, and manuals; creating working diagrams for circuits, electrical systems, and equipment
  • Proficient with installation tools and test equipment
  • Consistent record of good workmanship and compliance with applicable work and industry standards
  • Must be team-oriented and capable of supporting cabling, equipment, and system installations

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of shipboard operating requirements, material safety data sheets (MSDS), and safety procedures
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-2042, MIL-STD-1678-1, NAVSEA SI 009-04, and 009-123, NAVSEA Standard Items, Navy Installation & Maintenance Handbook (NIMB), and shipboard fiber optics
  • Knowledge of discrete, analog synchro, RS-422 serial, and Ethernet interfaces
  • Understanding of US Navy surface ship maintenance/repair manuals (JFMM, GSO, EPISM, NIMB, NAVSEA Standard Items) and reporting
  • Experience reading NAVSEA Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs)
  • Proficient in writing status reports and using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Reliable task completion and regular attendance without oversight
  • Shipyard Competent Person and OSHA Maritime 10-hour Training Course #7615
  • Familiarity with VSWR, OTDR, and TDR testing
  • Previous certification in fiber optic connectorization and inspection per Navy Standard Item 009-73 and MIL-STD-2042
  • Electrical background, trade school graduate, or ex-Navy Electronics field experience (ideal for IC/ET/AT/EM technicians)
  • NAVSEA certifications: Fiberoptic Core, BOF Methods and Components, Cable Handling, FOICB/TRB Forming, Single Ferrule, Cable Puller, Multi-Terminus, Fusion Splicing, Optical Testing
  • Copper cable termination and/or cableway inspection certification per DOD-STD-2003

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent required

Compensation

The SCA (Service Contract Act) role at The MIL Corporation is subject to the regulations and guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Labor. As an SCA position, it is classified as a service contract and is subject to specific wage determinations and benefit requirements mandated by the government.

The compensation and benefits for the SCA role at The MIL Corporation will be in accordance with the prevailing wage rates and benefits specified by the Department of Labor for the specific job classification and location. The current rate is $31.25 - $36.06 per hour. Final salary for this position is determined based on factors such as individual qualifications, education, experience, and contractual limitations.
