About the Department
As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a varied portfolio of programs in teaching, research and extension components. Collectively, these strengths not only serve our clientele and our science, but also provide a rich environment for graduate education and training that can be tailored to the specific career interests of the student, irrespective of whether they prefer training in the basic sciences or are preparing for a career in extension. Our education and research programs provide graduate and undergraduate students with unique hands-on learning opportunities using the latest technologies.
Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate, conduct, supervise other staff in the planning, execution, maintenance, and data collection of all field and greenhouse research experiments. This position will also contribute to laboratory experiments, preparing reports, and reporting on research progress.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Field, Lab, and Greenhouse Research:

  • Plan, establish, maintain, and collect data from research trials.
  • Ensure proper experimental design and treatment applications.
  • Troubleshoot issues and summarize/analyze data.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
  • Safely operate research equipment.


Teamwork & Supervision:

  • Work collaboratively as part of a research team.
  • Supervise graduate students, undergraduate students, and temporary staff.
  • Provide guidance and direction in research tasks.

Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and research cooperators.
  • Prepare written documentation, including data records and publications.

Data Collection & Integrity:

  • Observe, monitor, collect, and record data accurately and reliably.
  • Ensure data validity and integrity at all times.

Lab Techniques & Research Support:

  • Perform basic lab techniques such as:

    • Transferring cultures under aseptic conditions.
    • Isolating plant diseases.


  • Adhere to safety and sanitation protocols.
  • Support other research-related tasks as needed.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Must have understanding of basic laboratory techniques, including knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Ability to use lab equipment such as autoclaves and pipettes with proper training
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in field and greenhouse environments under adverse conditions
  • Abillity to travel to field sites within North Carolina and region
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience working under field conditions with plants
  • Research experience working in a laboratory

  • A valid NC driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
