Job Description

As Site Database Reliability Engineers on the Product Reliability Engineering (PRE) Tech team, we are passionate about providing an excellent developer experience to enhance the efficiency and productivity of our engineers. We build and run the tools and systems that Visa's engineers use daily to iterate, test, and deploy code, supporting database servers such as SQL Server, MySQL, Postgres, DB2, and various NoSQL database technologies.

The ideal candidate is well-versed in database administration and engineering practices and principles, sharing responsibility for overall database build, deployment, and support. You will provide technical influence and subject matter expertise to the database team, solve complex problems, and take a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. The role serves as both a technical and functional specialist, working independently with guidance required only in the most complex situations.

Essential Functions:

  • Architect, develop, deploy, and maintain PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MySQL databases in high SLA environments, supporting both off-the-shelf and internally developed mission-critical applications.
  • Ensure 24x7 database operation and availability, including participation in on-call rotation and routine tasks such as backups, patching, and upgrades.
  • Install, configure, monitor, upgrade, and maintain databases in production and non-production environments; manage database security and enforce best practices to protect against unauthorized access and data breaches.
  • Perform database administration, capacity planning, and implementation of high-availability, replication, and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Conduct proactive and reactive performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolution of escalated issues (Level 2 and 3), including root cause analysis and corrective actions to maintain stability.
  • Lead database maintenance, consolidation, and migration activities to new hardware and platforms.
  • Develop and automate scripts and tools (Database and OS level) to streamline administration, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance tasks using tools such as Ansible, Scalable, Liquibase, and Jenkins.
  • Build and maintain monitoring dashboards and alerting systems (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, Splunk) to identify and resolve anomalies, optimize performance, and ensure system health.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams-including Infrastructure Engineering, Product Development, Business and Technical Operations, System Administrators, and Network Engineers-to ensure delivery of database services within SLAs and performance targets.
  • Analyze business requirements, model data, develop robust and scalable solutions, and deliver clear technical documentation and presentations.
  • Evaluate, select, and implement DBA tools for performance monitoring, tuning, recovery, and change management.
  • Support code releases and deployments to CAS (test) and production environments and serve as the initial technical point of contact for tier-1 application issues.
  • Participate in project planning to ensure objectives and timelines are met.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript, HTML, C++), and scripting languages (Python, Shell, Perl, PowerShell) for automation.
  • Solid understanding of Linux/UNIX and Windows operating systems, networks, storage, tiered application environments, and security.
  • Foundational knowledge and hands-on experience with relational databases (RDBMS) such as SQL Server, including administration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, SQL queries, and stored procedures.
  • Familiarity with database monitoring and alerting tools (e.g., Prometheus) and container concepts.
  • Experienced in database installation, configuration, backup, recovery, security management, and use of DBA tools/utilities.
  • Strong grasp of software engineering principles, data modeling, and business intelligence tools.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills; able to resolve complex system and database issues efficiently.
  • Effective communicator with strong verbal and written skills; able to collaborate across teams and document technical information clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team in complex organizational environments.
