UI Health is seeking an experienced Medical Social Associate (Child Support Specialist) to join our Pediatric team. This role will report to the Patient Care Director and Administrative Nurse III and take direction from leadership under the department. The Child Support Specialist is responsible for collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to create and Child Support interventions including but are not limited to procedural preparation, support and distraction, support programs and education for siblings and family members, teaching coping techniques and developing coping plans, utilizing knowledge of child development to create appropriate interventions, and providing family-centered care.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides standards or specialized Child Life Education, technical training, or counseling to individuals participating in the approved Child Life Program, using a variety of resources and techniques.
  • Develops reviews and disseminates information, including policy and procedures that affects patient support activities of the Child Life Program to other professional staff of the hospital and/or visiting organizations, volunteers, institutions or community outreach.
  • Develops teaching and/or training materials related to the short and long-term planned curriculum for the Child Life Program.
  • Cooperates and functions as part of the health care team working with the team to coordinate information to share observation of patients' and families' emotional health, and to promote the parent-child interactions.
  • Interviews and assists individuals / volunteers / interns enrolled in the Child Life Program.
  • Responsible for the personnel relations and supervision of individuals affiliated with the Child Life Program as delegated.
  • Provides specialized knowledge of Child Life to other teaching or administrative staff members as consulting and multi-disciplinary health care team members.
  • Assists with the development of internal surveys and studies to determine factors affecting the utilization and scope of present and future services within the Child Life Program and Pediatric and Pediatric Intensive Care Units.
  • Participates actively in professional organizations and in the planning and development of long range goals in the Child Life Program.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient tours and special projects in Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. Provides orientation of the child and family to health care experiences and personnel.
  • Establishes comfortable relationships with families to ease their adjustments to the hospital while supporting family bonds and utilizing family strengths in the care of the child. Also, encourages the effective use of available programs and resources in the hospital.
  • Participates in the evaluation and practical training of the above nursing and volunteering staff;
  • Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities on the Pediatrics / Pediatrics Intensive Care Units.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:


    1. A. Bachelor's degree with a major in the social or behavioral science or related health specialty from an accredited college or university.

    OR

    B. Master's degree in social or behavioral science or related health specialty area from an accredited college or university.

    2. One (1) year (12 months) of progressively more responsible full-time experience in the practice of social services/ agencies or medical/clinical setting maintaining acceptable standards of social work practices

    3. Child Life Specialist certification is required

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Previous experience with children services preferred
    • Previous experience in an academic medical center setting preferred
