Chassis Engineering Team III Manager
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is searching for a Manager for the Chassis Engineering Team III
The Team: The Chassis Engineering Team III would oversee the design, development, and release efforts of the following disciplines: Vehicle Driveline, Chassis Mounts, Vehicle Chassis Controls (Pedals), Vehicle Intake Systems, Vehicle Exhaust Systems
The Position: The Chassis Engineering Team III Manager would have a wide breadth of automotive experience with the ability to lead the design and development of numerous vehicles with a focus on SUVs, body-on-frame pickup trucks, and off-road vehicle capabilities that meet or exceed Hyundai Motor Group (HMG)'s N.A. customer requirements from concept through lifecycle production, while simultaneously developing new technologies and adhering to the highest safety standards.
Managerial Duties include but are not limited to: Managing, training, evaluating, disciplining, and supporting recommendations for hire, pay changes, promotions, or terminations; assigning and distributing work to co-workers; instructing and training in methods or procedures; responding to complaints or grievances; writing and executing performance and competency evaluations
What You Will Do:
- Strategic Leadership: Create, communicate, and execute the Chassis Engineering Design Team's vision, laid out by the Sr. Manager in support of VE, HATCI and Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) visions, goals, and business objectives.
- Business Management: Successfully meet all KPI's including: Program Timing, Cost & Quality Improvement, Intellectual Property, Budget, Personnel Development, Corporate Culture, etc.; develop goals and objectives for all direct reports; lead tasks and projects to support the related team's work plan, ensuring all goals and budget spending are met for Chassis Engineering Design R&D budget.
- Team Management: Support annual team work plan and budget in support of the HATCI Vehicle Engineering (VE) vision; ensure budget spendings are met for a multi-million dollar R&D budget; manage and direct Engineers in daily activities for work projects relating to team activities in support of our three brands: Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis; ensure administrative functions such as purchasing requests, timecard, vacation requests, travel requests, etc., are followed on a timely basis
- Vehicle Development: Be a subject matter expert in relation to Automotive Chassis Engineering for Vehicle Driveline systems, Chassis mount Systems, Vehicle Control Pedals, Vehicle Intake and Exhaust systems, and Testing for Chassis designs, especially for our focused efforts with Electrified Vehicles, SUV's, Light Duty Trucks and Off-road vehicles; ensure the Vehicle Development process is followed from concept to postproduction; conduct competitive benchmarking, detailed engineering cost/weight analysis, performing drawing release, executing engineering orders, meeting safety/regulatory targets, etc; lead the releasing of responsibilities of all drawings released by the Chassis Team 3 Engineers by Checker Approval status in Hyundai EO (Engineering Order) system.
- Life Cycle Support: Support Manufacturing Plant and life cycle activities of 5 plants (located in Georgia, Alabama, Mexico, and Brazil) including: product launch metrics, continuous vehicle improvement, cost and mass reductions
- Collaboration and Stakeholder Management: Advocate for the internal and external customers; support collaboration with regional affiliates: Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, as well as corporate headquarters in Korea; build relationships with all levels, from Engineers, to Managers, to Presidents and C-Suite; work with other teams within VE, HATCI and its affiliates, providing support as required with testing, development, vehicle clinics, etc.
- Technology Assessment and Development:Support development of technical road maps and strategies with the goal of implementation to the production vehicle; liaise with multiple testing and development labs; provide support to new technology research and adoption projects
- Communication, Communication, Communication: Interface and co-work with other teams within HATCI and its affiliates; support creation of presentations to President, reoccurring group updates summarizing the key activities and future plans; provide technical direction and guidance; accurately maintain and update project status reports and review with upper management routinely.
- Budgeting and Resource Allocation: Support development of R&D budget, ensuring optimal utilization of resources; monitor and be first line approver for expenses, identify savings opportunities, and support project/strategic investment decisions to support all R&D activities.
- Travel up to 20% of time domestically and internationally.
What You Will Bring to the Role:
- Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, automotive, or a related field of engineering
- 10+ years of chassis design experience, with a focus on vehicle driveline, mounts, pedals, intake and exhaust systems
- Proficiency with 3D modeling, assemblies, and 2D drawing generation via CATIA V5
- Experience with CAD data management and revision control
- Proven experience in an automotive OEM or Tier-1 supplier environment and understanding of formal development processes (e.g., APQP, DFMEA, PFMEA, PPAP, etc.)
- Strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals (i.e., statics, dynamics, vibrations, and materials)
- Hands-on experience with mechanical analysis (i.e., FEA and analytical calculations) and suspension kinematics
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes for chassis components (i.e., stamping, forging, welding, and machining) and design-for-manufacture principles
- Experience in mentoring junior engineers and track record of leading technical projects or teams
- Ability to develop test plans, interpret data, and implement design improvements
- Flexibility withprogram and process changes, as Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is willing to make late changes to satisfy customer needs
- Good written, oral, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft programs, such as Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word
- Excellenttime management, self-management, and organization skills
- Ability to remain current with new technologies and best practices
- Willingness to attend training, workshops, or conferences to enhance skills
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex, section-related issues
- Valid Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in mechanical, automotive, or a related field of engineering
- 2+ years of mentoring entry to mid-level engineers and project management experience (as an engineering manager)
- Experience working on electric or hybrid vehicle chassis systems
- Familiarity with pickup trucks, SUVs, and off-road vehicles and knowledge of their specific cooling, chassis controls, intake and exhaust, durability, set up, and articulation
- Experience performing advanced chassis modeling, simulations, and optimization via CAE tools (e.g., ANSYS, Nastran, MATLAB/Simulink, etc.)
- In-depth understanding of vehicle ride & handling, off-road performance, and NVH considerations specific to heavy-duty trucks and SUVs
- Knowledge of solid axle and independent suspension systems in off-road conditions
- Familiarity with CATIA V6 and PDM (i.e., ENOVIA V6) or Windchill PLM systems
- Prior involvement in vehicle program launches (from concept through production)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Six Sigma certification
