Environmental Technician I

Summary

Responsible for monitoring industrial user facilities and wholesale customers to ensure wastewater effluent compliance with State, Federal and Local regulations.

Salary: $18.14 - $19.50/ depending on qualifications

Schedule:

  • Normal shift hours: Monday-Thursday 6:30am-5:00pm

  • Two one-week night shifts are required per year

  • Occasional weekend shifts required

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed walk through inspections of industrial and commercial industrial users to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations.

  • Visually inspect facility and perform on site pH testing and industrial sample collection and preparation for analysis based on Federal, State and local rules and regulations.

  • Monitor and sample customer city points of entry

  • Transport collected samples to laboratory.

  • Prepare sample chains-of-custody for all samples to determine permitting requirements

  • Perform Certificate of Occupancy inspections and complete industrial waste survey inspections.

  • Review industrial site locations for permitting requirements.

  • May perform inspections of sand traps and grease traps according to compliance.

  • Conduct routine laboratory maintenance, calibration and preparation of equipment, and enter data results into LIMS and LINKO databases.

  • Assist with the customer city flow meters

  • Assist with pollution prevention activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree

  • No experience required

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • Four-year college degree in environmental sciences, chemistry, or related field.

  • 1-2 years experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local environmental regulations

  • Skill in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)

  • Skill in utilizing industry specific software applications

  • Basic knowledge of industrial wastewater sampling procedures and practices

  • Skill in reading pH Meters

  • Ability to handle basic laboratory equipment

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The incumbent works in an outdoor environment; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Requires the ability to operate City vehicle, lift 75 pounds or more and maneuver through unpaved and un-cleared property. Occasional climbing of ladders or stairs required.
