The role - what you'll do Barr is seeking an Environmental Engineer/Scientist to join our Hibbing, Minnesota, team. In this hybrid role, you will support our Environmental Management group on multimedia projects for various industries, primarily focusing on permitting and compliance. You will use your regulatory knowledge to lead and support teams in completing permitting and compliance tasks, including performing calculations, conducting data analysis, and writing reports. A successful person in this role is intrinsically motivated and emphasizes client service. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their project management expertise and technical ability for a variety of projects. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. This person is also relationship-focused, as the role involves serving both internal and external clients. Your impact - key responsibilities
Permitting and compliance: Prepare and review NPDES stormwater/wastewater discharge permits and air permits; prepare other environmental plans and reports; complete multimedia compliance audits. Project management: Develop proposals, scopes of work, and budgets; participate in meetings and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel; conduct internal team coordination and staff mentoring; perform quality control review of draft deliverables; and conduct overall project management. Technical analysis: Perform regulatory applicability analysis, prepare compliance plans and reports, develop permitting applications, and perform technical and economic feasibility studies for pollution-control equipment. Regulatory knowledge: Regulatory programs related to project work may include the federal Clean Air Act (CAA), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the Clean Water Act (CWA), and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), in addition to state regulatory programs. Minimal field support: Provide occasional on-site support for client meetings, audits, assessments, etc. Mentorship: Assist in the development and mentorship of junior engineers and support staff.
About the opportunity
Compensation: Anticipated range of $90,000-$105,000 salary. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as Exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Hybrid: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Hibbing, Minnesota, office. Travel requirement: Up to 20 percent domestic field/on-site work, with an average of three days of continuous job site presence. Work environment: Some fieldwork locations include rough terrain typical of construction, manufacturing, or rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
About you - required core competencies
Education: Bachelor's degree in environmental or chemical engineering or other applicable degree with academic coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above. Experience:
10+ years of relevant experienceworking with state and federal environmental programs under the federal CAA and the federal CWA. Experience communicating directly with state and/or federal environmental agencies. Project management experience.
Licenses/certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Travel: Ability and willingness to travel to client locations and other Barr offices. Communication: Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
Helpful additional experience (not required)
Consulting experience with multimedia environmental compliance. Experience with the power, fuels, mining, and/or manufacturing industries.
