About the opportunity

SWCA is looking for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Project Level Geospatial Scientist for SWCA's Texas/Gulf Coast (TXGC) operations. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to both our Natural and Cultural Resource programs in the Texas/Gulf Coast subregion while collaborating with other SWCA offices nationwide. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience working in environmental consulting. Prior work with oil and gas projects is highly preferred, with demonstrated experience tailoring projects to the needs of clients and permitting agencies.

At SWCA, our GIS Department is comprised of over 70 GIS professionals with diverse expertise in GIS design, cartography, data management, and more. This position is available for distributed work in the US. However, it is preferred that the applicant be in or near Houston, Texas, within driving distance of the SWCA Houston office.

This is a full-time, regular (with benefits) position.

Under this job requisition, we may hire for any of the following positions:

  • Assistant Project Geospatial Scientist- Typically up to 3 years of relevant experience and expertise
  • Associate Project Geospatial Scientist- Typically up to 5 years of relevant experience and expertise
  • Project Geospatial Scientist- Typically up to 7 years of relevant experience and expertise

What you will accomplish

  • Work with the GIS, Natural Resources and Cultural Resources Teams to prepare web-based field maps, process field collected data, and generate maps to be included in reports needed to satisfy environmental permitting requirements of projects, namely under the Clean Water Act
  • Independently and as a part of a team, solve problems related to data research, data management, and data visualization
  • Communicate workload with the GIS and project teams to ensure timely and accurate delivery of work products
  • Lead the GIS components of moderate to large sized projects/tasks from start to finish
  • Serve as the GIS point of contact for large projects
  • Perform complex geoprocessing, modeling, or spatial analysis in coordination with subject matter experts and senior team members.
  • Help ensure the overall quality of work is consistent with SWCA's standards and practices alongside other team members.
  • Maintain productivity 85% (i.e., 85% of your time must be directly billed to projects) through proactively seeking available tasks and communicating openly with leadership about workload
  • Contribute to a collaborative work environment by maintaining open communication with the GIS team, project managers, report writers, and other staff
  • Use Esri's ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online for data management, production/editing, spatial analyses, and production of high-quality field maps and report figures
  • Follow data management best practices and provide technical support for a variety of mobile data collection systems including tablets, GPS receivers, Esri's Field Maps and Survey123 applications
  • Help design, create, maintain, and QA/QC spatial datasets
  • Apply knowledge of environmental resources and regulations to the job.
  • Comply with the safety plan

Experience and qualifications for success

We seek a team member who possesses demonstrated experience in environmental consulting and leading the GIS effort of large projects. We seek the following specific qualities:

REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Science, Information Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Land Survey, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a mid-level to senior GIS analyst or similar position with demonstrated increasing levels of professional-level responsibility and leadership
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, and Survey123

PREFERRED or HELPFUL:

  • Master's degree in Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field with an emphasis in GIS
  • Prior work in environmental consulting
  • Knowledge/experience applying GIS to cultural and/or natural resources management
  • Knowledge/experience working with local or federal regulatory agencies such as the USACE, TCEQ, FERC, USFS, NPS, BLM, USGS, etc.
  • Knowledge/experience applying GIS to the development of a construction project (preliminary site assessments, permitting, progress monitoring, OM&M)
  • Knowledge/experience with energy projects (e.g., wind, solar, fossil fuels)
  • Demonstrated experience with GPS technology, field data collection techniques, data integration to a GIS, and troubleshooting of equipment and digital files
  • Completed all GIS-related aspects of a project, from budget preparation/scoping to pre-field preparations, to geospatial analyses, to final report maps and calculations
  • Demonstrated ability of data transfer, data analysis, data mining, and data inventory using software applications (e.g. Windows Explorer, Excel, Access, Esri ArcGIS)
  • General understanding of basic statistics, and geometric math computations (e.g., summary, distributions, frequency, min/max, range, angles, distance, slope, degrees, area)
  • Knowledge/experience with workflow automation and tool building using Python, Arcpy, Arcpy.mp, or SQL
  • Knowledge/experience creating database schemas, domains, web applications
  • Field work experience

In Houston, TX, an employee in this position can expect the following rates: Assistant Project Geospatial Scientist $28.94/hr. to $37.13/hr.; Associate Project Geospatial Scientist $67,572.96/yr. to $86,879.52.00/yr.; Project Geospatial Scientist $74,954.88/yr to $96,532.80/yr., depending on experience, geographic locations, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
