Position Purpose

The position of Instructional Assistant for the Respiratory Care Program involves a combination of both teaching support and administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instruction & Remediation in Labs: You'll work directly with students to provide instruction and remediation within the laboratory setting. This involves helping students grasp practical concepts and skills specific to respiratory care, ensuring they are prepared for real-world clinical settings.

  • Classroom Instruction Support: Assisting the lead faculty in teaching specialized content in the classroom. This might include reinforcing complex topics or helping explain difficult concepts to students who need additional help. Along with providing remediation to students in the laboratory/classroom setting.

  • Competency Testing & Grading: You'll help administer and grade competency tests and lab exercises. This is vital for ensuring students meet the necessary standards to progress in their program and ultimately become licensed respiratory therapists.

  • Simulation Competencies: Assisting with simulations is a critical component, as these mock scenarios give students a chance to practice skills in a controlled environment. Your role could involve running the simulations, overseeing performance, or evaluating the students.

  • Preparation & Maintenance of Equipment: Making sure that all the necessary tools and materials for the labs are ready for use is key to a smooth learning experience. You may also be involved in basic maintenance and inventory control to ensure that the program has what it needs to operate efficiently.

  • Data Collection for Program Assessment: Data on student performance and competency is crucial for both program improvement and accreditation purposes. You will help gather and maintain these records, contributing to the continuous evaluation of the program.


Essential Functions

Given the nature of these duties, you'll need:

  • A solid foundation in respiratory care practices and clinical procedures.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students and faculty.

  • Organizational skills to handle equipment preparation, inventory, and record-keeping.

  • Ability to assist with both clinical simulations and theoretical classroom instruction.

  • Attention to detail for tasks like grading, documentation, and program assessment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of Associate degree in field with appropriate current and unrestricted license as a Respiratory Therapist.
  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care, Education, Management, or health-related field preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years clinical experience as a respiratory therapist including critical care.
  • Multifaceted clinical background is preferred. Prior teaching in discipline is preferred.
  • Must be credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist and Licensed in the State of Ohio. Credentials and license must be current.
