Associate Biologist

We are searching for an
experienced Associate Biologist at our Westervelt Ecological - Auburn facility.

The purpose of the associate biologist position is to provide technical support in the fields of land stewardship, biology, habitat restoration, and biological monitoring. The Associate Biologist will assist in the stewardship of all WES properties within the Southeast Region. The Associate Biologist will be responsible for collecting, organizing, analyzing and reporting data in technical documentation and reports in support of Westervelt Ecological Services' projects.

  • Conduct
    field work for biological monitoring and reporting for WES projects.
  • Conduct
    land stewardship and site maintenance activities including, but not limited
    to, invasive species and vegetation control, assistance with prescribed
    burns, and coordination with lessees, neighbors, contractors, and third-party
    auditors.
  • Conduct
    biological studies in support of WES projects.
  • With
    Land Stewardship Manager, provide substantive and detailed biological input
    to the Southeast Region Director for the preparation of mitigation and
    conservation banking reports and documents.
  • Provide
    input to the Land Stewardship Manager to ensure that biological
    considerations are factored into restoration plans.
  • Review
    potential project sites with other team members to provide insight on
    biological and land management opportunities or constraints.
  • Able to travel and spend the night near various field sites as needed.
  • Assist, where
    appropriate, in the development of biological monitoring or research
    projects.
  • Supervise
    outside consultants preparing specialized biological resource related
    documentation.

Required
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree- ideally in Biology, Botany, Wildlife Science, Forestry, Environmental Science or similar field.
  • 3-4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Competencies: Excellent communication skills, ability to adapt quickly to change, can work independently and collaborate well with team members.
  • Alabama Drivers License with clean driving record.
  • Working knowledge of invasive species found in the Southeast.
  • Ability to work independently in the field, often in remote locations. Will need to travel to field sites as needed which will include overnight stays up to several days per week during summer months.
  • Technical knowledge of dendrology and basic plant identification skills.
  • Basic understanding of operation and maintenance of field biological and land management equipment (e.g., all terrain vehicle, chainsaw, tractor, mower, etc.).
  • This role has a physical component with essential duties to include climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling and handling.
  • Must comply with safety practices and use of PPE.

Preferred Experience:

  • Direct, practical, field based biological experience including species specific field surveys, wetland delineation and habitat mapping.
  • Experience with herbicide prescriptions, prescribed burning, tree planting, and stream restoration.
  • Implementation of monitoring protocols for ecological restoration, particularly in streams and wetlands.
  • Direct experience supervising and managing contractors for conducting land stewardship and habitat restoration activities.
