HDR Engineering is looking for a Bridge Inspection Engineer to join our South Carolina Transportation Business Group. This position may be based out of any of the following HDR offices: Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, and Fort Mill. The Bridge Inspection Engineer will be expected to perform bridge inspections and office engineering (rating, rehab/repair design, CADD). They will assist in performing bridge inspections and preparing reports in accordance with NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards) on a regular basis. They will prepare and plan for inspection and review inspection reports for Team Leader Review, QC, or QA. They may also assist in bridge inspection program management, oversight, and the preparation of inspection guidance documents. They will prepare, review, and seal load rating reports and rehab/repair design. On a day-to-day basis, they will also be expected to:
- Function as part of a team to complete initial, routine, in-depth, and fracture-critical inspections of bridges, dams, hydraulic structures, and other miscellaneous structures for agencies (federal, state, local) and private owners using National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and other relevant standards.
- Lead or assist with team planning and coordination to complete inspections.
- Develop bridge inspection reports summarizing outcomes and condition assessments completed during inspections.
- Complete structural load ratings as needed.
- Prepare rehabilitation or repair contract documents including plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS degree in Civil Engineering
- PE in South Carolina (or can obtain same through reciprocity within 6 months)
- Successful completion of FHWA-NHI approved comprehensive training to become a certified Bridge Inspection Team Leader
- Willingness to travel within the United States to inspection sites
- Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills and ability to work with various teams
- Willing to work with other disciplines (bridge, roadway, hydraulic, construction, planning) within the office, as necessary, during inspection down time
- Possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving record and can travel for multiple night stays during the week and on weekends
- This position requires physical ability to perform field inspections of in-service bridge and culvert structures, tunnel structures, highway structures, overhead sign structures, hydraulic structures, and metal traffic signal poles. Physical demands include positioning extension ladders, maneuvering small boats, driving long distances, confined space, air travel, occasionally working at night and on weekends, and walking long distances on uneven surfaces.

- Must have good communication skills and willing to work in multi-disciplinary team environment
- Strong client skills
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in bridge design
- Mobile Elevating Working Platform (MEWP) Operator Certification for scissor lifts, manlifts, under bridge inspection vehicles (UBIV) and vehicle mounted bucket trucks and bucket vans
- AASHTOWare BrM and BrR experience
- Strong written communication skills
- Local candidates are preferred

Required Qualifications

Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example:
Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license. - Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu and engineering software packages such as: LEAP Bridge Enterprise, FB-MultiPier, LPile, AASHTOWare BrR, midas Civil, MDX, SAP2000, CSiBridge, RM Bridge, spColumn, STLBridgeLRFD, or STLBridge.
- Knowledge of ADINA, LUSAS, Bently OpenBridge Designer and OpenBridge Modeler and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3d.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, MicroStation, AutoCAD, MathCAD, LARSA, Prestress Concrete Design
- Experience using structural analysis programs and bridge design software
- Experience managing junior staff
- Excellent communication skills and working in a team environment
