HJF is seeking a Biomedical Repair Technician (BMET) to provide biomedical equipment repair services and technical consultative advice. This is the first of two levels of Biomedical Repair Technicians.

This position will be in support of the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) at Fort Sam Houston. NAMRU-SA is a major research and development center whose mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research, to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. Its purpose is to provide non-personal support services to NAMRU-SA. Performance will include intramural research and development (R&D) support services for four (4) scientific directorates and their respective departments: Directed Energy Health Effects Directorate (DEHE), Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine Directorate (CCC&OM), Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Directorate (CH&RM), and Research Services Directorate (RSD).

This effort primarily entails providing a full range of administrative services which involve planning, coordinating, and executing various operational functions that meet both directorate-level objectives and the command mission. These professional services in the areas of administrative, financial management, information technology, logistics and program management support services.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position is contingent on contract award.



  • Biomedical Equipment Maintenance and Repair:

    • Repairs, overhauls, modifies, tests and calibrates a full range of medical and research equipment, including systems which utilize image intensification and enhancement with visual monitoring of television type monitors, systems with programmable computer data collection/analysis capabilities and systems with sophisticated automatic sequencing of testing and analyzing of data.
    • Coordinates research of requirements and equipment specifications, and installation, maintenance, operational and safety requirements.
    • Performs routine periodic maintenance on sophisticated items such as ultra-centrifuges, high pressure liquid chromatographs, liquid phase sequencers, lypholizers, spectrophotometers, and electrophoresis equipment.
    • Tests, repairs and calibrates shop equipment and insures accurate repair and calibration procedures on scientific equipment.
    • Accomplishes necessary procedures to ensure adequate records of maintenance work conducted and acquisition and installation of replacement parts to accomplish tasks assigned.

  • Refrigeration Maintenance and Repair:

    • Operates, maintains, and repairs of all refrigeration systems associated with biomedical research, teaching and support equipment, such as refrigerators and freezers including cascade and multistage auto cascade ultra-low freezers, ice makers, refrigerated laboratory ultra-speed centrifuges, refrigerated microtomies, refrigerated radiation detection systems, water baths, stirrers, benches, incubators, walk-in refrigerated boxes (cold rooms) etc., to include controls, adjustments, and associated electro-mechanical and electronic control and alarm systems.
    • Some research equipment may be highly sophisticated state-of-the art fabrications that require consultation with the manufacturer regarding maintenance and repair procedures.
    • When engineering data isn't available, refrigeration systems must be maintained using experience and basic knowledge or refrigeration principles.
    • Calibrates, maintains, and repairs-controlled environment research chambers.
    • Schedules and accomplishes all preventive maintenance required by the various manufacturers for all types of refrigeration equipment.
    • Provides consultative advice and applied expertise in the following areas: Distribution, management, assignment and status of work requests; Parts ordering and availability; Quality assurance of repair and maintenance services; Charge Management procedure; Preventive maintenance scheduling; Maintenance program utilization; DI water system maintenance; Difficult and unusual problems; Instruction of staff on biomedical and related maintenance and repair techniques; Instruction of biomedical technicians and professional investigators (in the academic departments) in the operation and application of various types of equipment and systems used in their laboratory.

  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Education and Experience



  • Successful completion of the DoD Biomedical Equipment Technician program or an associate's degree in biomedical electronics technology from an accredited institution and be a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES).
  • One year experience in repair and maintenance of dental products and equipment related to research.
  • Ability to install, maintain, service, modify, troubleshoot and calibrate a variety of environmental compliance devices by interpreting engineering and vendor information, schematic diagrams and graphic illustrations.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Ability to learn and retain knowledge of substantive programs and their relationship to the logistical support functions within the department.
  • Ability to learn and retain knowledge of the mission, duties, priorities, commitments and program objectives of the department and the ability to respond to fluctuating workloads.
  • Ability to learn and retain knowledge of supervisor's policies, preferences, obligations, and professional interests.
  • Ability to learn and obtain knowledge of medical, military and law enforcement terminology as they apply to the logistical requirements and mission of the program.
  • Skill in operating a computer for basic word processing and data entry.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance, including background check and drug screening.
  • All staff required to enter the labs shall maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent.

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects
