Essential Job Duties |
The Accounting Specialist provides financial and administrative support to multiple campus-affiliated units and student organizations. This position is responsible for delivering high-quality customer service and supporting daily financial operations.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the main contact for financial system inquiries and customer service
- Process daily financial transactions including accounts payable, travel, and purchasing
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records
- Ensure proper and efficient transaction recording
- Support day-to-day accounting functions for the units
- Communicate with internal departments, student organizations, and external vendors

Knowledge - Technical:
- Thorough knowledge of government accounting methods, procedures, and accounting practices
- Basic knowledge of the principles of a specialized accounting field or program (as required)
- Knowledge of a broad range of technology, financial systems, and software packages
- Ability to develop formulas for complex spreadsheets
- Ability to set up automated procedures and resolve operational issues with software and hardware
Financial Program Monitoring and Management:
- Ability to monitor and manage financial accounts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with accounting standards and/or program regulations
- Ability to manage reporting of complex financial areas or programs, including preparation and analysis of financial statements and reports
- Ability to supervise various financial functions of considerable complexity
Problem Solving:
- Ability to resolve programmatic and financial problems of considerable complexity through research, analysis, and implementation of change
- Ability to develop and implement procedure changes
Communication:
- Ability to justify and defend financial information
- Ability to relay program information and explain processes to customers
- Ability to respond to customer needs within established parameters
Leading Teams:
- Ability to train, assign, supervise, and review the work of others
- Ability to perform or supervise several administrative functions or financial functions of considerable complexity

Minimum Experience/Education |
- Accounting or Business Administration degree

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education |
- Accounting or Business Administration degree preferred; however, relevant experience is key
- Higher education experience, including familiarity with finance policies and procedures
- Experience with PeopleSoft or other Enterprise Resource Planning systems in a higher education setting
- Proficiency with Outlook, PowerPoint, and advanced Excel functions
- Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving
- Ability to independently explain financial concepts and communicate effectively, efficiently, and diplomatically-both orally and in writing-with staff and external partners
- Knowledge and application of GAAP, GASB, and internal controls
- Experience collaborating and sharing financial information with multiple stakeholders, including students
